Can You Hear Me Now?

By Mark Corke

Save your cellphone from the drink. Stay connected with your crew while ashore with Talkabout walkie-talkies.

Do much cruising and there's a good chance that someone from the crew will want to head ashore for some shopping or other chores while the remainder of the crew hang out on the boat. Although tempting, using a marine-band VHF for communicating with a shore party is illegal and could land you a hefty fine.

Keeping in touch with each other just got as little easier with the Motorola T600 Talkabout walkie-talkies. Unlike a precious cellphone, these devices are waterproof and they float, so if you drop them into the bottom of a wet dinghy there's no harm done. The range varies depending on the time of day and atmospheric conditions, but we had no trouble covering 5 or 6 miles, more than enough for most situations.

The radios are supplied with rechargeable batteries and charger or alternatively they can be run from AA batteries, but with a slight loss in performance. Another handy feature is the flashlight built into the bottom of the radios — great for finding your boat keys in the dark. MSRP is $119.99 per pair.
