Stuck In the Sand, But A Happy Ending
On September 27, as we were navigating the Hobuken Canal in New Jersey, southbound at Buoy 25, we were sideswiped by a 26-knot gust that successfully launched our dinghy into the wind and waves opposite the mouth of the Bay River. As we attempted to retrieve our Zodiac, we were pushed into shallow water and a deep sand shoal. Grounded!
When we realized efforts to free ourselves would result in damage to our boat, we contacted TowBoatUS through a radio relay by First Light and we were able to have the Belhaven dispatch send help. Because of squally weather, our location was more than an hour away so we dropped anchor and waited. And there they were, right on schedule! It must've taken 40 minutes to work us out of the sand, but the TowBoatUS's experienced, good-humored, never-doubt-it-for-a-minute crew not only pulled us free … they also found our wayward dinghy that had drifted more than a mile away in extremely shallow water! These guys were great! Thanks so much to the Belhaven/River Forest TowBoatUS rescue crew, the dispatch office, and for all of the member services provided by TowBoatUS Every dime well spent!
