PENSACOLA, Fla., Oct. 16, 2020 -- Sometimes a hurricane comes knocking on your door when you least expect it. That was the case for GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance customer and BoatUS member Stephen Tisdale, who, like hundreds of boaters in the Gulf Shores/Pensacola region, found himself unexpectedly in the crosshairs of Hurricane Sally on the morning of September 16. Out of town on a business trip, Tisdale drove 20 hours to make it make home for the storm’s landfall (with no speeding tickets) but was unable to reach his house or his prized, navy-blue, 40-foot Chris-Craft Roamer in time.
Even though the vessel was secured on a beefy lift with extra-tall pilings, Sally’s storm surge tore the boat from its cradle, ripped open her port side and deposited her on a nearby beach a total loss. Now Tisdale had to add to the list of insurance companies, including his homeowner, auto and separate PWC policies that he would need to submit Hurricane Sally claims. That’s when he began to notice that his GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance claim experience was not the like the others.
“You did what you said you would do,” said Tisdale, referring to his GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance claim experience. The salvage was assigned to surveyor David Kacprowicz, a 25-year veteran of the GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance Catastrophe Field Team. “When I first met with David on the beach,” said Tisdale, “he was straightforward, told me what to expect, and didn’t pull any punches. Due to the severity of damage, he recommended a total loss. All of my coverages were clearly explained to me.”
“Then David had to handle the property owner where the boat was located,” added Tisdale. “He was demanding compensation, and I know David had a difficult task of dealing with him. On my end, however, it was a smooth process. I wish every insurance company was as easy to deal with as GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance. It means a lot today when you do what you say you will.”
Is Tisdale now in the market to replace the Roamer? “You bet,” says the life-long Gulf boater, adding, “And I will insure it with GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance.”
The GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance Catastrophe Team is expected to complete field operations next week.
