Free Vessel Safety Checks Ensure Boaters Are Ready to Hit the Water

BoatUS-sponsored program helps identify vessel safety gaps

SPRINGFIELD, Va. – March 19, 2026 – March marks voluntary Vessel Safety Check Month, an important initiative sponsored by BoatUS and administered in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard. BoatUS encourages members to request and participate in this free voluntary inspection ahead of the start of boating season.

A vessel safety check (VSC) is a free, voluntary safety inspection of recreational boats conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons. This check ensures your boat is in full compliance with all federal and state boating laws.

“A yearly vessel check is one of the simplest ways a boater can protect themselves and their passengers,” said Ted Sensenbrenner, Director of Boating Safety at BoatUS Foundation. “An annual check helps ensure critical safety gear is on board and gives boaters added confidence before they head out onto the water.”

During this free 15- to 30-minute inspection, examiners check for life jackets, registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation, fire extinguishers, distress signals, as well as other safety items.

A certified inspector can conduct the inspection at your dock, driveway, or marina. If your boat does not meet the requirements during a vessel safety check, boaters will not receive a citation. Instead, they will be given a written report outlining the steps needed to address any issues identified so the vessel can be prepared and safe. If the boater passes the inspection, they will receive a Vessel Safety Check decal for their boat.
