2011 Life Jacket Design Competition
1st Place: Float-Tech Inc Cost Estimate: At full scale commercialization pricing is $79.00 to $39.00 depending on model. Materials: 4 way stretch material with UV protection which incases an inflatable bladder. Current version of Sea-Tee uses an 8g CO2 canister, providing 10+ lbs of buoyancy with manual inflation. Slightly larger canisters can be used to achieve more buoyancy. Possible versions can include automatic, manual, and/or oral inflation capabilities based on users' needs.
2nd Place: The Directors Bureau Cost Estimate: $27 Materials:UltraFoam: Very fine cell structure that offers low moisture absorption, good thermal insulation value and it is resistant to mildew, mold, rot and bacteria and also claims excellent chemical resistance. Microspheres: Extremely buoyant, virtually insoluble in water and made from specially formulated water and chemical resistant soda-lime borosilicate glass. Water Resistant Nylon: Durable, water and wind resistant nylon fabric.
3rd Place: Nathan Karabon/Josh Jankowski – Thomas More High School Cost Estimate: $20-$25 Materials:Materials: Basically we took apart a life jacket, cut the closed cell foam to fit our design, sewed the pieces together, wrapped the foam with utility fabric, attached the clips from the life jacket, and added straps from a back pack to make the back adjustable.
