Shimano Takes Computerized Casting Next Level

Curado DC 150 is a low-profile baitcasting reel that features an upgraded digital braking system and lightweight spool for long, backlash-free casts.

Backlash may be the Achilles heel of baitcasting reels, but that problem has been mitigated in recent years thanks to advances in the braking systems on many modern reels. Shimano takes that effort to the next level with its new Curado DC 150 A, which boasts an integrated microcomputer that monitors spool speed to the tune of 1,000 times per second, applying just enough braking to combat backlash while still allowing for maximum spool speed and casting distance.

Shimano’s proprietary I-DC4 braking system – now in its fourth generation – also has four different modes, so you can tailor the reel’s performance to match the way you fish. The first mode maximizes casting distance overall. The second is optimized for tossing lures with braid or nylon mono line, while the third is designed to provide ideal performance when casting with fluorocarbon mainline. And the fourth mode maximizes braking to prevent problems in high-backlash situations like skipping lures under docks, or when casting into strong winds.

Setting aside the tech, the Curado DC 150 A has the same construction and features as previous Curado DC 150 models. The body is Shimano’s proprietary Hagane metal structure to minimize flexing; the drag system is cross-carbon; bearings are S A-RB shielded to prevent salt and sand intrusion; and pinion gears are supported on both ends to maintain precise alignment. The DC 150 A also enjoys the benefit of a new MGL Spool III design, which is lightweight aluminum with 15% lower inertia to boost startup speed and casting distance.

We handled the Curado DC 150 A at the 2026 ICAST fishing tackle trade show, where it won an award for “Best New Freshwater Reel.” It feels comfortable in hand, and the clutch bar is perfectly positioned for your thumb. An easy-to-spin star drag is also within thumb’s reach, and cranking is about as smooth as fishing reels get. We’d give it two thumbs up, but one of our thumbs is busy casting right now.

The Curado DC 150 A comes in six different versions, including both right- and left-handed. All have six ball bearings, weigh either 7.8 or 7.9 ounces, and can put out 12 or 13 pounds of max drag. Line capacity is 120 yards of 10-pound mono or 150 yards of 20-pound braid. The main difference between models is gear ratio, and three different ratios are available: 6.2:1, 7.4:1, and 8.5:1. Line retrieve per crank is 27-, 32-, or 37 inches.
