The Cobra BlueBound 650 Handheld VHF Radio features DSC functionality for emergencies.
Handheld VHF radios can significantly increase your safety margin, whether as an on-board backup, to carry onto someone else’s boat, or stowed on your kayak or paddleboard. BoatUS Magazine recently tested the Cobra BlueBound 650, a IPX7 waterproof, portable VHF with integrated GPS and Digital Selective Calling, or DSC.
When we tested the Cobra BlueBound 650 we found it intuitive to use and comfortable in-hand. One surprise feature we discovered is the squelch, which is operated via the up and down buttons rather than an old-school knob. We also like that the active noise cancellation feature can be adjusted through five levels, separately, for transmission and reception.
The ergonomically designed BlueBound line of handheld VHF radios are easy to grip.
Having DSC means that when you press the distress button, the radio can transmit your identity and GPS location to the Coast Guard and other DSC-equipped vessels within range, provided you’ve obtained an MMSI number and programmed it in. And with the BlueBound 650’s onboard GPS and an MOB button, the radio can even help you navigate back to a waypoint via a compass screen in case of emergency.
The Cobra BlueBound 650 boasts a 12-hour battery life with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and comes with a USB-C dock charger. It also has “rewind say again” abilities, 1/3/6-watt selectable power settings, tri-station watch, and weather alerts. It’s IPX7 waterproof, floats, and in case it does go into the drink a “Float N’ Flash” strobe lights up so it’s easy to spot even in the dark. Another rare ability this radio has is Bluetooth capability (as well as a wired jack), so you can use it with hands-free headsets and phone connectivity.
The Cobra BlueBound 650 comes with 3-year warranty and has an MSRP of $249.95 (at time of publication) | cobra.com
For anyone reading this who is NOT a BoatU.S. member, Cobra is offering a complimentary one-year BoatUS Basic Membership with any Cobra Marine purchase. And BoatUS members can register their radio to get an MMSI number needed to activate DSC free of charge.
