Leopard 52: Cruising Cat With Hybrid Power

The French luxury catamaran builder’s new flagship is built for blue water passage making, living aboard, or epic social sailing with family and friends.

In late 2025, Leopard Catamarans introduced a new flagship, the Leopard 52, to replace its popular Leopard 50. There’s no way around it – the 52 is BIG! At 51 feet, 8 inches overall with a 26-foot, 9-inch beam, the Leopard 52 displaces over 45,000 pounds. On deck you’ll find 438 square feet of integrated indoor-outdoor living. Above she carries 1,800 square feet of sail area.

Naval architects from Simonis Voogd Design have optimized the hull shape to reduce pitching and improve turning compared to previous models, according to Leopard, and added 17% more upwind sail area than the 50 – thanks in part to a taller rig, overlapping genoa, and optional square-top main. The boom is slightly lower than previous models, a tweak designed to improve upwind performance and provides easier access to the stack pack.

The helm and all sail-handling controls are elevated to starboard, but immediately adjacent to the sun lounge, which prevents the skipper from getting cut out of the conversation.

Inside, Leopard focused on making the main living area a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, with large sliding doors at the transition between main saloon and aft cockpit. Leopard offers 4-, 5-, and 6-cabin layouts, and options to carve out both forward and aft utility rooms with workbenches and a washer/dryer. The galley is starboard and forward, overlooking the trampoline.

Leopard took ecofriendliness and off-grid livability a step further on the 52. Owners can choose between twin 57- or 80-hp Yanmar diesels and can optionally add electric drives from Joool to go hybrid. The Joool system is also capable of hydrogeneration to recharge batteries under sail. 4 x 400W solar panels come standard and integrated, as well as lithium batteries.

The five-cabin layout of the Leopard 52 has also joined The Moorings’ charter fleet under the name Moorings 5200. They’re currently (or will soon be) sailing out of Moorings harbors in La Paz, Mexico; St. Lucia; St. Martin; Athens, Greece; Seychelles; Thailand; Belize; Tahiti; the British Virgin Islands; and Grenada.
