Temo 1000: Clever Electric Outboard For Dinghies & Sailboats

This 3 hp-equivalent electric outboard has integrated a nifty design feature to solve common complaints.

The Temo 1000 electric outboard is designed as auxiliary propulsion for dinghies and lightweight sailboats up to 26 feet in length.

The Temo 1000 is the latest 3 hp-equivalent electric outboard to compete in the small electric outboard sphere. At 35 pounds, it’s easily transportable (especially with a dedicated carrying case), and can power up to a six-person dinghy or 26-foot sailboat. It can run for four hours at half throttle (“cruising speed”) or one hour at full throttle, with average reported real-world run times of two to three hours.

The Temo 1000 is a more powerful version of the Temo 450.

The Temo 1000 charges from dead to full in five-and-a-half hours on 120-volt power, according to the manufacturer, although it can charge on 12- or 24-volt as well. It’s IP67 waterproof, and the 13-pound battery is removable. The only regular manufacturer-recommended maintenance is regular freshwater rinses.

Temo 1000 features an adjustable shaft length and retractable tiller.

The standout features, however, are the ergonomics. First, the tiller stows fully inside the unit, conserving space when in storage. The shaft length is fully customizable, because the mount can be slid up and down the unit and locked in place wherever is best. And the mount itself attaches to a proprietary rotating bracket, which means you can attach the Temo from inside the boat without leaning precariously over the transom, then swivel it around and into the water, significantly reducing the risk of a drop or strained back.
