The Battle series of spinning reels from PENN Fishing has been around for a long time, but the company is committed to incremental improvement. The latest generation, the Battle IV, has been upgraded for longevity with the Penn Hydro Armor seal system.

Hydro Armor seals out water, dust, and sand and grit at critical points, like the joint between the handle and body, under the dust cap, and under the spool. The spool design has also been redesigned to eliminate cutouts, further preventing the intrusion of unwanted moisture or contaminants. This added protection to an all-metal-body reel with CNC cut gears and Penn’s proven HT-100 carbon drag system indicates the Battle IV is built to weather the elements for the long haul.

Ranging in size from 1000 to 10000, the Battle IV series has a model for every angler.

BoatUS Magazine put a Battle IV through the wringer on the brackish waters of the Chesapeake Bay as well as in the briny Atlantic, and it’s held up well. While it is heavier than composite-bodied competitors, the reel is comfortable in hand and as smooth as they come, with little rotor wobble, an authoritative bail kickback, and a round line-keeper that holds onto braid better than most.

The Battle IV is available in 1,000 through10,000 sizes, in standard and high-speed versions with gear ratios from 4.2:1 to 7.0:1. The reels feature six ball bearings and put out a max drag ranging from 10-to 40 pounds. Penn is also packaging the lineup as LE rod and reel combos, combined with a graphite composite blank and stainless-steel Dura-Guide guides. Rod options include 7- to 10-foot models in one and two pieces, and there’s also a three-piece travel rod with a case available.

$149.95 to $189.95 for reels; $209.99 to $249.99 for LE combos | pennfishing.com
