The Boat Trailering Guys
I pulled my trailer wheels to inspect bearings and saw the grease was white. I didn't install the bearings and am wondering if there is white grease used these days or if this is an indication water has gotten into the bearings? Which is it? K. Laslow, Whitefish Bay, MI.

GEORGE: If the grease is white I'd make a change as soon as possible. One reason is there's a lithium-based grease that shows up in trailers from time to time called "White Lightning" and it isn't designed for the heat a trailer will generate. Get it out of there and while you're at it, change the seals as well as the bearings.High performance marine grade bearing grease is usually found in three colors: blue, red and green. If your grease is white, that means water has gotten in so I'd get to work on it pronto.
