Hi fellow boaters! I'm working on a new look for the BoatGroups forum, and
would like to know if anyone has a picture they would like to have shown on
every page in the banner (the top right of the page where there is currently 5
boats blended together). This may soon turn in to a monthly "contest" if there
is enough interest, but to get it off the ground I just want a few pictures to
start off with.

Of course this is not something required of members, you do not have to be
a member of BoatUS, and you do not have to be a professional photographer
to submit a picture. I just want to have some actual "member rides," if you
will, to spice up this forum. There are no specifics to what the picture must
contain, except it must show a boat, and must conform to the BoatUS
BoatGroups Rules.

Some legal items I feel required to disclose: You must own the boat pictured,
or have permission from the owner to submit the picture, and if you submit a
picture you are granting permission to BoatUS to use the picture on the
boatus.com website; however any pictures will be held to
boatus.com/boatgroups (this forum) unless we ask for your permission to use
elsewhere; however, that is not the reason or intent of this post.

The owner(s) of the chosen picture(s) will be notified and will have access to
view the final rendition of how their picture will look before the banner is
placed in to forum.

Thanks for any and all interest and also any comments or suggestions you
may have.

Brian

Thanks for the quick post Nauti Cat! I love the burgee as well!

And I would like to inform other members that flying the
BoatUS burgee is not a requirement when submitting your
pictures. I'm just looking for pictures of any kind of boats that
would look good in the banner, whether you're representing
B/US or not.

The only place I know of for sure is the BoatUS.com website,
found here
https://
www.boatus.com/logoitems/default.asp
. I have been
told that some cooperating marinas may have them for sale
as well, but I'm not 100% positive about that.

Correct, being a member of this forum is not the same as
being a member of BoatUS. If you are NOT a member of
BoatUS, that is fine, it is not required in order to purchase a
flag; when purchasing the flag, you can just leave the ID#
field blank and continue with the rest of the form. If you are a
member, it will be on your member card or other piece of
documentation you have received from BoatUS.

Hello All,

This forum seems completely separate from the Boat US Marathon Boat Owners Group forum which is up around 91 pages since it started in 2008. Am I correct?

Hi whmmer,
Yes this forum is separate from the Marathon owners group on
the message boards. If you are a Marathon owner you can
definitely post there, it seems to be a very popular thread.
This Pictures thread is in every boat manufacturers forums
(on BoatUS), so other owners won't always see it.

Hello everyone!
After gathering and photoshopping some pictures, we have some banners that we want you all to see
before they are added. Below are pictures from Nauti Cat and Jerry9276, so we are able to represent
mostly everyone (there were no submissions from sailboaters, so maybe next time around).

We appreciate all picture submissions, and will keep them for possible future use on this site. If you
have any questions or comments or other pictures to submit, please let me know in this thread or thru
PM.

Hi Brian,

Here is a picture of my Connie (Chris Craft Constellation 500) riding peacefully on Kirwan Creek near my dock.

The original is much sharper but this is the best I can do in about 100K.  BTW, I have 1392 posts which I think makes me a Commander.

was migrated successfully. I'll change your group.

Nauti, Banjoman, midway, and Pete, thanks for the picture
submissions too, great looking pictures, I'll make sure they
get placed in the pot to be used next round. Keep 'em coming!

Hi Brian,

A member of the Connie Forum, David Ross, has asked if a specific section for pictures could be added to the forum.  I've mentioned that pictures can be added to the posts but I'm not sure that he's comfortable with the picture posting process.  A lot of the members can't seem to master pictures.  It's strange because the members of the Catalina forum seem to be very familiar with the picture posting process.  Can you do anything?

Hello Brian

Enclosed picture was taken in 2009 when we owned the boat. It is kind of a classic 1965 CC Cavalier with a plank, not plywood hull. It was built in Stockton CA and has twin 318 Chryslers and has been pretty well maintained. We sold it recently when we upgraded(?) to a 1984 381 Catalina. I kind of miss the old girl (the boat, I still have the girl taking pictures on the bow) from time to time.

I thought you might want to include it in your gallery.

Some how to instructions on posting pictures to Boat Groups

This process was done in Windows XP / IE8

THROUGH THE FORUM

BoatGroups restricts the size of uploaded pictures to 100kb, in a file type of .jpg, .jpeg, .gif or .png. Most image files are in the .jpg or .jpeg format already, so that will be a least likely scenario (I can detail how to convert if need be). Most pictures will also be more than 100kb, especially if taken from a newer camera at full size. To make the picture smaller in size:

Microsoft Office Picture Manager: (Came stock in Microsoft Office)

Right click on the picture, select open with, choose "Microsoft Office Picture Manager"

Picture > Compress (at bottom)

Select Web pages

*This automatically resizes them to 448 x 336, and usually comes to 76.2 kb, which is perfect size for the forum.*

The most important part after hitting ok is to select File > SAVE AS...

*DO NOT hit "save" because it will overwrite your file, and if it is the original, it may be next to impossible to recover the picture at the original size.*

Save as a new name in a location you will know to go to in the next step.

Go to the reply field at the bottom of the page, in the top row on the far right, is a tree with a blue up arrow.  Click this image.

A new window opens (be sure your pop-up blocker is off) and click the browse button.

Locate where you saved your edited copy of the picture.

Click select, and it will place it in your reply field.

This upload process should be the same on all browsers.

THROUGH AN EXTERNAL WEBSITE

There are countless websites out there that enable you to create a free account and upload nearly an unlimited amount of pictures, that you can then send to anyone via email, blog, or forum. The most popular websites are flikr and photobucket.

FLICKR:

Sign up (with yahoo or gmail, or create your own new account).

On the next page, you can go to step 1, but I’m going to step 2 (uploading pictures).

Click step 2’s “Upload your first photos”

You’ll be taken to another page, where you see “Upload to Flickr”, and how much you have used of your 100mb limit. (if you just signed up, this will be 0 mb).

Choose step 1, and a new window opens (turn off your pop up blocker)

In the new window, navigate to your pictures. Hold the ctrl button down while clicking pictures if you wish to upload more than one at the same time ({I} highly recommend).

Then the page refreshes with your photo list and total size. Make sure the button is clicked to have the pics public, or else they will not show in the forum.

Click upload photos and videos.

Another page uploads.

Then it says finish.
Click add description, then just save at the bottom (adding a description if you like)

It takes you to a gallery page. Click on the photo you want to add to the forum.

Near the top left, there is a “Share This” button. Click it.

The drop down gives you some choices. To work in the forum, click the “Grab the HTML/BBCode” second from the bottom.

Click the bullet under the code box that says “BBCode”.

You can select how big you want to display the photo, the page wont break (scroll horizontally) if you keep it at medium.

Click in the text box, hit ctrl + a, ctrl + c. (Selects all then copies)

Then go to the forum thread you want to post in and write what you want for your reply, then hit ctrl + v (paste).

Then hit submit when you’re finished. Your new post pops up with your picture!

PHOTOBUCKET

Sign up for a new account.

In the blue header bar (home, albums, etc.) there is a green button that says “Upload Now”. Click it.

Click the green button on the next page: “Select Photos and Videos”.

A new window opens. Navigate to your pictures to upload, selecting multiple pictures using the ctrl key.

Select open.

As soon as you do, your upload begins.

When the photos are uploaded, click the “save and continue to my album” button.

Back at the album page, hover over which picture you want to post in the forum (you must do this one at a time).

While hovering, go to the bottom of the box where it says “IMG Code”. (This is Flickr’s equivalent of BBCode.)

Select the text in the box on the right of the IMG Code title, and it will automatically copy.

Go to the forum thread reply box, and write your message, then press ctrl + v (paste).

And your done!

If you have any questions or are stuck somewhere, or have a simpler solution, please feel free to post. Questions can also be directed to my PM or email.

Hi Brian,

I'm not sure whether Dave wants a totally new site for storing pictures or just an easier way to post them on the existing site.  Personally, my only problem with the existing system s that sometimes the maximum size allowed puts a crimp on posting pictures.

I'll post your post on External Websites on the Connie Forum and see what reaction I get.

Hi Brian,

A number of the members of the Connie Forum have been gravitating towards posting on Facebook.  I think this is a mistake and may create problems.  I hope the rampant identity theft on Facebook doesn't bleed over to this site.

Therefore, as an alternate, could we just create a new BoatGroups Forum called Chris Craft Constellation Photos?  I could suggest that they publish all their photos there.  If necessary, in order to keep the size down, we could limit the number of 100K pictures to a dozen which would keep the post size down to 1.2MB per boat and limit the number of posts per boat to one.  I doubt the total load would be more than 25MB.

From a BoatGroups site architecture standpoint this would require almost no changes.  Please let me know what you think.

Pete - isn't this going a little over the top?  "Rampant identity theft""?  Could Facebook stay in business if this was the case.  There are levels of protection one can add.   Your previous post indicated you worry about someone reading the transom name and stealing one's identity.  There are so many easier ways to steal ID's that the thought of someone taking the time to look at a boat name then go through the steps it would take to gain useful information just does not add up to me.

I have been using online bill payment programs for 20 years.  Never have I had a problem, no theft, no phony checks, deposit always on time, etc.

I buy, pay and do a lot of online activities. I use PayPal regularly. I buy on eBay.  The key is having a good protection program on your computer and taking advantage of protections the programs offer.  If you do not, then you may pay the price.

Regarding Facebook: you seem terribly concerned that we'll all leave this Forum and move to Facebook.  I said this in a previous post and I'll say it again; Facebook is a SOCIAL NETWORK.  It simply is not designed (IMHO) for discussion of the many technical facets that we discuss on the BoatUS forum.

I believe that Aaron created a Facebook page for us to have some fun with.  Maybe talk about things that aren't even related to our boats.  On Facebook, if I want to talk about how wacky my new doggy acts on our boat, then I feel comfortable do that on Facebook, NOT on the Forum.

I believe that Vicki Stellato (Five Star) and myself having both mentioned that neither of us feel that anyone will desert the Connie Forum, simply that Facebook is yet another avenue which by people can communicate, albeit, in a less formal fashion.

There are already some "friends" on FB that I've never heard of.  Obviously, these folks are a good source for this Forum.  But they may never take the time to visit.

Emory

Hi Emory,

Nearly every day there is an AOL news item on various new scams on Facebook.  I don't write them.  I just read them.  The "Rampant Identity Theft" phrase came out of yesterday's news item.  Perhaps AOL has a grudge against Facebook but I see articles on Facebook's scam problems on TV and in the newspapers too.

Yesterday's news article also mentioned several programs the hackers use to bypass Facebook's security system.  As to difficulty in getting a persons identity from the name on the transom, it's quite easy.  Just go to the CG doumentation site and look the boat up.  You'll usually get the owner's address.  I can do that in less than a minute.  If not there are broker's programs that will get the info.  But that's a little more difficult because you need to know a broker.

Once you have a name and address go to any one of hundreds of "people finder" web sites and you'll get a lot more info free.  And then if you want a complete dossier pay a few bucks and you'll get the whole spread.  It's really very easy and a 12 year old could do it without working up a sweat.

Fortunately (and unfortunately) Facebook has millions of users and only a small fraction get scammed.  It's like driving a car.  Only a small fraction get killed.  But you have to drive a car.  You don't have to go on Facebook.  Why take the risk when there are many other safer sites?

I think I'm more worried about the Facebook scams bleeding over into our forum than anything else.  Owning a yacht makes you a priority target for scammers.  So finding a forum with dozens of yacht owners is a real bonanza for a scammer.

Hey guys,
I talked to my boss, and we're still brainstorming how to put
an image gallery on the forum. The reason I can't have it set
up right away is because of the possible security risk it poses
to our system, as well as finding one compatible for our forum
(it's about 5 years old). But we have talked about what we
want it to do, along with the input all of you as well. I'll keep
you updated on the status as we move forward. Thanks.

Brian - one thing I would like you to know, we ALL appreciate your work on the Forum.  I'm not going anywhere and I do not believe anyone else is.  The Facebook thing is just something we're playing with and "socializing" with without getting into the tech talk we do here.  I love the Forum and what has offered and will continue to offer.  The thought of Forum members

"moving" to Facebook, I believe, an erroneous one.

Again, your efforts are appreciated.

I must second the motion... The forum is great and Brian is doing a great job,  Facebook may be great for certain aspects of social life and friends, BUT.. it cannot and should not replace this forum for discussions about our boats and sharing our photos.

Hi Brian and All,

Subject: Separate Topic for Posting Pictures

In a previous post I said we should set up a new "BoatGroups Forum" for posting pictures.  My apologies, I used the wrong terminology.  What I meant was just set up a new "topic" called "Chris Craft Constellation Photos" which would be used exclusively for posting Connie pictures.  That can be done in a couple of minutes and requires very little effort.  That may not be the best final solution but I think it would be a satisfactory temporary solution.  If we find a better final solution we can implement it later.

While Brian is looking for a final solution, I suggest we stop beating on this problem and let him work it out.  He'll tell us what can be done as soon as he figures it out.  And in the meantime the temporary solution would probably be satisfactory for most.

I in no way am trying to encourage or dissuade anyone from using Facebook. I'm on it, and yes, BoatUS has I believe 5 "fan" pages on there as well; it's slowly taking over the internet. I do agree with you guys on having an easier process of uploading photos, along with an area that is apart from each individual thread. Turns out this forum does come with a photo gallery, but it does not perform to the way we feel would best serve the members. So, I have talked to the programmer and we are going to lay out a way to make this work to the best of it's ability, and so that it will also be user friendly.

The gallery is just a standalone gallery, and it currently splits it in to each members photos. We are going to modify it so it displays each manufacturer, and each member will be able to choose where to upload their pictures in to. Currently the limit on each picture is 500kb for the gallery, not 100kb like a regular thread. We are planning to take this route, because this will also leave room for us to build on for the manufacturer owners manuals as well. This project will require a little more and will not becoming live as quickly, but it is in the works. If you have any other suggestions or comments please feel free to let me know.

PS: I am working on the next round of header pictures to be added to the rotation of the three that are already up. So if you have taken or found any pictures of your boat you would like to see in the top right of the page, you're more than welcome to email it to me or attach to this thread. Thanks!

Personally, I like the way photos are added here on BoatUS but a little larger photo memory size would be better even if a control limits the actual dimensions in the posting (so the pages dont become wider than the monitor or window).  To post in a lot of other forums that I belong to, you need a photobucket or flickr account, have to upload to them first, then grab the appropriate link to the photo depending on the forum then paste it into the "post reply".  Here it is nice to be able to just upload directly from our PC's.

Just my $.02

Everyone,
I appreciate your feedback. I am listening and trying, and will be implementing new features as I can. However, I would like to revert this thread back to the original purpose, which was to submit pictures for the banner. I hope no one sees this as a bad thing, because it is not, I just like to have one area where people can go to see info on updates, as well as submit comments (it is me trying to keep organized in what I need to do).

Nauti, I appreciate your comments. Being a part of other forums, I agree with you, it is nice to upload straight to this forum, and that feature will not be going away. However, I don't like having to resize before upload, and I'm sure other members feel the same, which I have talked to another team member and we are working on script so that you can upload a full size picture, but the site will automatically re-size it to a specified size. The only reason we cannot let members upload a full size photo is because of storage limits, server loads, and bandwidth usage.

The new "Updates" thread is located off the homepage, at this link: http://www.boatus.com/boatgroups/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2 721&PN=1&TPN=1, please refer to it for continuation of the updates or suggestions.

If members have any more photos to submit please feel free to, I am working on the second round of pictures to be added to the revolving banner in the top right.

Thanks!!
