ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 22, 2019 – Want to learn the basics of powerboating or brush up on your boat handling skills? The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water together with Freedom Boat Club Annapolis offer a choice of three fun and affordable on-water boat training courses taught aboard single-engine powerboats: Intro to Boating, Precision Docking & Boat Handling, and Open Water Boat Handling on select Thursday afternoons from May 2 through August 1.

Each three-hour course is taught at Freedom Boat Club’s location at Fairwinds Marina, 1000 Fairwinds Drive, Annapolis. Class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-certified instructor. All courses start at 4 p.m. and are reasonably priced at $149.

The Intro to Boating course covers shifting and steering, basic docking, open-water handling and basic navigation and is held May 2, June 6, July 11 and August 1. Precision Docking & Boat Handling covers 180-degree turnarounds, docking on both port and starboard sides, departing from a dock, and how to use the S.C.A.N. (Search, Concentrate, Analyze, and Negotiate) method and is offered July 11 and August 1. Open Water Boat Handling includes utilizing boat trim, displacement and planing modes, object avoidance, ferrying and emergency stopping, and is only offered on August 1.

The goal of the BoatUS Foundation and Freedom Boat Club Annapolis courses is to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making hands-on boating education more accessible.
