WHAT: On Monday, December 8, 2014, at 10:00AM the Chicago City Council will vote on Chicago’s E15 Consumer Choice Ordinance 02014-5037. If passed, the proposal would mandate that all City of Chicago gas stations offer E15 fuel or gasoline containing 15% ethanol to all consumers. For safety, reliability and cost concerns, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) urges Chicago area boaters to speak out against this proposal immediately.
WHY: If passed, the council would put ethanol industry interests above consumer safety and constituent needs – ethanol at any cost. Federal law prohibits the use of E15 in recreational boats as well as small engines. Automobile manufacturers including BMW, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Honda, Kia, Mercedes, and Volkswagen advise their warranties do not cover fuel or emission related damage when using more than 10% ethanol blends.
Most boat owners refuel their trailerable boat at roadside gas stations and BoatUS believes the current pump labeling requirements are inadequate. These boaters can easily misfuel their boat at the proposed E15 pumps as tow vehicles and boats on trailers are often filled from the same fuel nozzle.
The proposed ordinance aims to reduce fuel costs and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. However, the facts and math say otherwise. Ethanol has 33% less energy than gasoline
, therefore reducing the mileage traveled. And according to a recent study conducted by the US Department of Energy, the slight reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is mitigated by older vehicles’ incompatibility with E15 that causes higher tailpipe emissions.
The corrosive nature of higher blends of ethanol also puts more boaters at risk for damages to hoses, gaskets and seals that keep engines running safely. For more information on ethanol and boats visit www.BoatUS.com/seaworthy/ethanol.
If passed, the legislation may also force stations with limited gas pump selections to replace their current E10 dispensing selection with E15 to meet the mandate.
We urge all City of Chicago boat owners or anyone concerned with this issue to Click here
