LANCASTER, Ky., May 19, 2020 --When your father buys you a Sunfish sailboat for your sixth birthday, and by 8 years old you’re sailing the small craft solo on the ocean, it’s not a stretch to imagine that a life spent working on the water may follow. For Capt. Clayton Embly, that has meant racing sailboats, towing boats, crewing ships and tugs, captaining yachts, sailing schooners, running tour boats, managing a ferry system, and even earning a Navy Outstanding Achievement Medal. Now with a desire to be closer to home, he’s ready, according to Embly, to do something “just for myself” with the opening of TowBoatUS Herrington Lake, Kentucky.

“I am doing something I’ve always wanted to do – start my own business helping boaters get safely home,” said Capt. Embly. “We are here for you, day or night. We’re the friend you can call to get professional assistance − a tow home, battery jump or some fuel to get back to the marina.”

The newly-opened 24-hour on-water towing and response service for recreational boaters is part of a nationwide network of 300 ports and 600 towing response vessels across the country that responded to more than 70,000 requests for assistance last year. “Most calls on Herrington Lake are routine,” explained Embly, “such as a dead battery, bad fuel gauge, or striking a submerged log.” The 25-mile-long lake is the epicenter of recreational boating for the Lexington region, with 18 marinas and hundreds of private docks.

Much like an auto club for boaters, TowBoatUS Herrington Lake offers BoatUS on-water Unlimited Towing Memberships for freshwater boaters and anglers for just $85 per year. Boaters without BoatUS towing services face out-of-pocket costs that average $750 per towing incident, with some paying more. Included with Unlimited Towing membership are more than 25 Boat Owners Association of The United States benefits and discounts, a subscription to BoatUS Magazine, free DSC-VHF radio registration, and more.

This is not Embly’s first time getting boaters safely home. More than 25 years ago when he was an Able Seaman in the Merchant Marine, Embly moonlighted as a hired towing captain for TowBoatUS Potomac, Virginia. Ironically, the 22-foot Mako response vessel he captained back then as a young man is now, after several refits, the new company’s first response vessel. “The boat kept me safe and did the job well, so when I heard she was available I put her right into my fleet,” said Embly. Homeported at Royalt’s Marina, the vessel is rigged for towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery and soft ungroundings and is easily recognizable by its bright red hull with TowBoatUS logos emblazoned in white letters on each side.

All of the company’s towing captains are U.S. Coast Guard-licensed. Separate from BoatUS towing services, the company offers salvage and dive services to boaters, marinas and insurance companies.

The fastest way to summon assistance from TowBoatUS Herrington Lake is to download the free BoatUS App, which connects boaters to the closest local towing captain. Additionally, the company can be reached at 859-533-3360, by hailing on VHF channel 16, or by phoning the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at 800-391-4869. More information can be found at, or by calling 800-888-4869.
