U.S. SAILING ELECTS FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT
St.
Louis, MO – U.S. SAILING, national governing body of
the sport, has elected its first woman president: Janet C. Baxter of Chicago,
IL. Immediate past president Dave Rosekrans passed the helm
to Baxter at the organization’s annual general meeting in St. Louis Oct.
19.
“I’m honored
and excited to serve as president of US SAILING,” said
Baxter. “I look forward to working with many sailors who have a passion
to make
the
sport better and to share it with others.”
Baxter first joined the
U.S. SAILING’s
Board of Directors at age 30, making
her one of the youngest Board members at the time. She has worked with the
organization’s finance and membership committees and is a certified
judge. "I hope to help our volunteers be more effective, touching
more sailors
and
enriching our current programs. We can make better use of technology and
communications and in this Olympic year,” said Baxter. She is also
on the Audit Committee of the United States
Olympic Committee (USOC).
For Janet Baxter, sailing has always played a big role in her life. As
a high school student, Janet accompanied her father to US SAILING meetings,
and in 1987 she became a board member. She started as a representative of
the one-design class council, went on to become chair of the general services
committee and the budget committee. Baxter is also a US SAILING certified
Judge and a US SAILING Category B Athlete.
“I am thrilled to be recognized by US SAILING volunteers who have
dedicated so much to sailing,” said Baxter. “I’ve enjoyed
being involved in this organization for such a long time and am looking
forward to the opportunities that are ahead.”
Baxter began her sailing
career in Chicago, Illinois. She is an experienced dinghy sailor and also
races
regularly on a Tartan Ten and on a Swan 39.
Currently a Vice President of US SAILING, she lives and works as a business
consultant for IBM. Baxter’s parents met through sailing and her father,
Mark H. Baxter, was a long-time volunteer for US SAILING, winning the prestigious
Nathaniel G. Herreshoff Trophy in 1987.
