Are weight distributing hitches necessary/helpfull if the tongue weight is well below the trucks' limit?

Typically weight distributing hitches are used for relatively large loads (5,000+ lbs) or if the trailer load is causing excessive sag to the rear of the tow vehicle. You do not want to use this style of hitch in any situation if your trailer is equipped with surge brakes as the brakes may be rendered inactive. If the tongue weight is well below the truck's limit (and the above conditions do not exist) there is no advantage to using the weight distributing hitch.
