My tow vehicle doesn't have a "tow package" but I'm towing 85% of it's tow capacity. Am I OK? W. Trufero, Astoria, OR

MIKE: If your vehicle has a towing capacity rating and you are below that rating as you have stated then you are ok. I would still strongly suggest adding an automatic transmission fluid cooler if applicable. This will extend the life and performance of your transmission, which is one of the key features that you find when you purchase a "tow package". My vehicle also did not come with the tow package, but I was able to add this feature for a couple hundred dollars at my local transmission shop. GEORGE: I wouldn't worry about it. Tow vehicles are designed for a short term over load of 40% more than the stated towing capacity so it sounds as though you are covered when pulling the boat up the ramp.
