Can tire pressure have an affect on having hot hubs?

K. Willis, Annapolis, MD

Answered on: 6/2005

MIKE: Low tire pressure will certainly cause your tires to get hot and possibly blowout, however, this shouldn't have an effect on the hubs. Hot hubs are generally caused by worn bearings, overtightening of the hub, lack of grease or any combination thereof. GEORGE: The answer is "not really" but low pressure "and I mean real low tire pressure" can cause drag and make the hub heat up. Hot hubs are usually caused by malfunctioning bearings so that's where I'd look first. That said, if you are running your tires practically flat, yes, that could cause the hubs to heat up. Look at your bearings first though.
