Boat Trailering Guys:,
I just received a new Cobalt 222 and trailer. While trailering the boat I have noticed that the winch seems to high on the trailer. This is causing the strap/metal hook to dig into the rubber bow gaurd when I tighten the winch. I have looked for an alignment guide or document to show proper winch alignment but can not find anything. Is there a proper way to align a winch vertically? A picture of the proper bow gaurd and winch placemetn would be great. You would think this information would be out there but it seems hard to find and it seems everyone has a different opinion.

Unfortunately all trailer/boat configurations are going to be slightly different. You do want to position the winch on the stand so that the cable/strap is as horizontal as possible when it is extended. You also want to make sure that there is enough clearance so that it doesn't interfere with the rubber bow guard. On most of the trailers that I have owned I have been able to run the cable below the bow guard while maintaining a horizontal line to the winch. On the winch stand you should have a series of bolt holes that will allow for vertical adjustment of your winch. This website has some good photos of the positioning of a winch. The winch shown is electric but will be positioned in the same manner as a manual winch. http://www.daybreakfishing.com/Launch.html
