Question

Boat Trailering Guys:,

We own a 2005 4 Winns Fun Ship 214 that we trailer to different lakes. We would like to know whether it's best to leave the boat cover on or take it off when we trailer the boat on the freeway and highways? Our concern is somewhat for gas mileage, but especially for the care of the boat. Thanks for your information.

There are many covers that are rated for safe usage while trailering. This has not been my experience as there are many edges and angles on a boat that will shred a cover when it is under a wind load. Not only can you damage the cover, you can also damage the fiberglass finish and/or cushion fabrics with the "whipping" fabric. I have also seen pieces of fabric rip loose and fly into surrounding traffic. It is not safe in my opinion.
