Two lessons for the price of one burned boat: The crew of this blazing boat reported that the smoke coming from the engine compartment smelled like an electrical fire. Upon opening the hatch (first mistake), they saw smoke coming from the batteries, but no one thought of turning off the battery switch hiding under the cabin steps (second mistake). After emptying three fire extinguishers into the compartment, all six passengers had to abandon ship. A "fixed" extinguisher system in the engine compartment, or a portable fire extinguisher discharged through a discharge port, probably would have easily put out the fire, after turning off the electrical power.
