ROCKWALL, Texas, July 16, 2018 – Traditionally on Lake Ray Hubbard, when a boat has broken down, run aground, run out of fuel, or needed a tow back to the launch ramp, the vessel owner has had to rely on Good Samaritans for help. With the recent opening of TowBoatUS Lake Ray Hubbard, a 24-hour on-water towing and assistance service, boaters no longer have to worry if someone is going to stop and help.

Captains Scott Self and Erik Oistad, co-owners of the business, both grew up on boats and have been sailing together for decades. With recreational boating activity growing on the lake, they saw a need for a professional on-water towing service in the area to help boaters get home safely when problems arise.

“The big thing that drew us to the business is helping people,” said Self. “With my other job as a sunset cruise captain, I am on the water every day, and I see people break down all the time. Towing boats can be extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, so TowBoatUS Lake Ray Hubbard adds a level of professionalism in getting boaters safely back to their docks.”

Much like an auto club for boaters, BoatUS offers on-water Unlimited Towing Memberships for boaters and anglers for just $72 per year. Boaters without BoatUS towing services face costs that average $750 per towing incident, with some paying into the thousands out of pocket.

Self and Oistad both have their U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain’s Licenses and have a variety of boating experiences from all over the world. They have two full-time captains assisting them with the business, and they’re all very familiar with the types of problems boaters face on the 14-mile-long by 5-mile-wide lake. “We are in a very windy region, which often affects boating,” explained Self. “And, like any other waterway, we see our share of routine breakdowns due to bad fuel, a dead battery, or other mechanical issues.”

Lake Ray Hubbard is getting more and more popular with fishing tournaments and wakeboaters, and it’s one of the major sailboat racing areas near Dallas where national and international competitions are hosted. Self and Oistad look forward to continuing their excellent relationship with local law enforcement to provide the best and most reliable service to boaters in the area.

TowBoatUS Lake Ray Hubbard operates a Glacier Bay 22 catamaran with a pair of new outboards that’s very stable for towing and soft ungrounding work. Their second vessel is a 16-foot Boston Whaler center-console with twin outboards that’s mainly used for jump-starts and fuel delivery. Both response vessels are rigged for towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery and soft ungroundings and are kept at Chandler’s Landing Marina, which is centrally located for fast response times. The boats are easily recognizable by their red hulls and TowBoatUS logos emblazoned in bright white letters on their sides.

Boaters can reach TowBoatUS Lake Ray Hubbard by hailing on VHF channel 16, by calling the company directly at (469) 209-9749, by phoning the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at (800) 391-4869, or via smartphone using the BoatUS App. More information can be found at or by calling (800) 395-2628.
