Retired Coast Guard Chief Brings TowBoatUS to Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, Mass., May 24, 2016 -- Captain Shawn Brule, the retired US Coast Guard chief who became the owner of TowBoatUS Cape Cod last year, is expanding his business by opening a new TowBoatUS port in Plymouth, 20 nautical miles to the northeast.
“While we covered the Plymouth/Duxbury area last year,” Brule explains, “it was a long run from our base on the Cape Cod Canal in Onset. It could take us an hour or more, and there was a high demand for a service like ours.” The solution, he realized, was to open a new port in Plymouth, a prime boating area for the hundreds of locals who homeport their boats there and the cruisers who visit to explore Plymouth’s many historic sites. “With this new port we can decrease our response time and provide professional, prompt service to Cape Cod Bay boaters,” he said.
Brule, a former senior chief boatswains mate, spent his entire Coast Guard career in New England waters. “I know these waters well,” he said, describing Cape Cod Bay. “I serviced all the buoys and lighthouses in the area, and I know where all the shoals are.” He uses that knowledge to come to the aid to boaters who get stuck on a sandbar, have a mechanical breakdown, need fuel, a battery jumpstart or other routine assistance.
Much like an auto club for boaters, TowBoatUS offers on water Unlimited Towing Membership plans for saltwater boaters and anglers for just $149 a year that includes BoatUS membership. All BoatUS towing membership plans are good for any boat you own, rent or borrow. Without a towing plan, boaters face costs that average $700 per incident nationally. TowBoatUS is the largest on water towing fleet in the country with over 600 red towboats at over 300 locations and last year the service responded to over 70,000 on water requests nationwide.
The US Coast Guard-licensed Brule or other licensed captains will operate TowBoatUS Plymouth’s response boat, which is painted bright red with the TowBoatUS name and logo emblazoned in white letters on the hull. It is a 26-foot Robolo with twin 225 HP Mercury outboards that is fully rigged for towing and salvage, with powerful pumps, battery jump packs, dive gear and extra fuel. It is stationed at Brewer Plymouth Marine, a full-service marina, a few feet from the floating replica of the Mayflower.
Boaters can reach TowBoatUS Plymouth by hailing them on VHF channel 16, calling the company directly at 508-295-2226, by phoning the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at 800-391-4869, and via smartphone with the free BoatUS Towing App. More information can be found at BoatUS.com/towing or call 800-888-4869.
