Your State's Boating Regulations

Safety Requirements (AS 05.25.010)
- A watercraft operated on inland waters must
carry at feast one life preserver, or lifebelt, or ring buoy, or other device of the sort
approved by the United States Coast Guard for each person on board, so placed as to he
readily accessible. A watercraft carrying passengers for hire must carry, so placed as to
be readily accessible, at least one life preserver of the Sort approved by the United
States Coast Guard for passenger-carrying watercraft for each person on board.
- A motor-driven watercraft operated for hire
must carry a fire extinguisher capable of promptly and effectively extinguishing burning
gasoline.
- The operator of a watercraft on the water of
the state may not transport a person under 13 years of age on the deck of a watercraft or
in an open watercraft unless the person is wearing a United States Coast Guard approved
Type I, Type II, or Type Ill flotation device. in this subsection, "personal
flotation device" does not include a life bell or life ring.
Water Skis and Sunboards (AS
O5.25.O2O)
- A person may not operate a watercraft on the
inland waters of this state for towing a person on water skis, or a surfboard, or similar
devices unless (1) the watercraft is equipped with a rearview mirror in which the person
being towed can be viewed, w (2) there is in the watercraft a person of 12 years of age or
older in addition to the operator, in a position to observe the progress of the person
being towed.
- A person may not operate a watercraft on the
water of the State to tow a person under 13 years of age an water skis, a surfboard, or
similar device unless the person being towed is wearing a United States Coast Guard
approved Type I. Type Ill or Type Ill personal flotation device. In this subsection, "personal
flotation device" does not include a life belt or life ring.
Accidents and Liability
Collisions, Accidents, and Casualties (AS
05.25.030)
- The operator of a watercraft involved in a
collision, accident. or casualty shall give to other persons affected by the CC 111810 fl,
accident, or casualty assistance that is necessary to save them from or minimize any
danger caused by the collision, accident. or casualty and shall give the operator's name,
address, and identification of the operator's watercraft in writing to any person injured
and to the owner of any property damaged in the collision, accident, or casualty.
- In the case of collision, accident, or
casualty involving a watercraft. the operator of the watercraft, if the collision,
accident or casualty results in death or injury to a person or damage to property in
excess of $100, shall file with the department a full description of the collision.

General Provisions
Prohibited Operation
It is the policy of this state to promote
safety for persons and property in and connected with the use, operation, and equipment of
vessels in recreational pursuits in inland waters and to promote uniformity of laws
relating thereto.
- A person may not operate a watercraft
whether for recreational purposes or any other purpose or manipulate water skis. a
surfboard, or a similar device on the waters of the state in a reckless or negligent
manner so as to endanger the fife or property of another person.
- A person may not operate a watercraft
whether for recreational purposes or any other purpose in violation of AS.28.35.03O on the
waters of the state while under the influence of any intoxicating liquor, narcotic drug,
barbiturate. or marijuana.
