Boating Glossary

When you're new to boating some nautical words might not be easy to understand, so we have provided a basic introduction to some of the most common terminology.

QUARTER

The sides of a boat aft of amidships.

QUARTER BERTH

A bunk which runs under the cockpit.

QUARTERING SEA

Sea coming on a boat's quarter.

QUAY

A solid wharf or structure built of stone along the edge of a harbor used for loading and offloading of cargo, and embarkation and disembarkation of passengers. A quay may be constructed parallel or perpendicular to the bank of a waterway.

QUICK FLASHING LIGHT

A navigational aid with a light that flashes about once per second.
