When you're new to boating some nautical words might not be easy to understand, so we have provided a basic introduction to some of the most common terminology.

OFFSHORE

Out of sight of land.

ON THE HARD

A boat that has been hauled and is now sitting on dry land.

OUTBOARD

1. Toward or beyond the boat's sides.
2. A detachable engine mounted on a boat's stern.

OUTBOARD BRACKET

Support device for mounting outboard engines that extends aft of the transom.

OUTDRIVE

The lower unit of a stern-drive motor that houses the drive gears and to which the propeller fastens.

OUTRIGGER

Poles designed to spread out fishing lines and keep them from tangling while trolling.

OVERBOARD

Over the side or out of the boat.

OVERTAKING

Said to happen when on vessel is passing another from behind.
