Sunreef Open Foil Power Catamaran

By Rich Armstrong

Bet you haven't seen anything like this boat before!

Sunreef foil power catamaran

British boat builder Sunreef Yachts presented the first open foiling power catamaran concept in 2014 during the Cannes Yachting Festival. Since then, company engineers and designers have been developing the concept to achieve "the world's most technically advanced multihull luxury speeder available on the market."

Regardless of the company's marketing-speak, the design they came up with is pretty cool. The 40 Open Sunreef Power is available in both planning and hydrofoil version (pictured).

The futuristic boat is equipped with inboard propulsion ranging from twin 425-hp to twin 1,100-hp — yup, that's 2,200-hp! — to offer an impressive speed potential of over 60 knots.

Taking speed to a higher level, the hydrofoil-equipped 40 Open Sunreef Power H is offered in multiple outboard engine configurations from twin 627-hp to quad 400-hp. The innovative retractable hydrofoil system lifts the boat above the water when cruising above 25 knots. As a result, the 40 Open Sunreef Power H can glide above the waves to attain speeds up to 60 knots in foil-borne mode. With the drag reduced to an absolute minimum, the boat also benefits from extremely low fuel consumption and long range.

Sunreef promises the beamy 40 Open will represent a new level of onboard comfort for a 40-footer, with an open-forward dining area with adjustable tables and abundant seating, a comfortable cabin perfect for overnight trips; and inside the hulls, a head, and additional sleeping cabin or utility room.

The concept design has yet to be priced by Sunreef, but Hull No. 1 is now under construction. For information, contact the North American dealer for Sunreef, New York-based Aeroyacht.
