Powerful New Boat Navigation App For Your Smartphone

By Rich Armstrong

iNavX unleashes one powerful boat navigation smartphone app that delivers high-resolution charts for the entire country.

Entrepreneur Shaun Steingold pulls the smartphone out of his pocket to hold up.

"These things control our lives. Why not take a whole chartplotter in the palm of your hand?," he asks. "For $25, it's a full navigation system in your pocket."

He is talking about iNavX, an app developed by San Francisco-based NavX Studios, the company he founded. Included in the one-time $25 fee, users receive a complimentary copy of high-resolution NOAA charts for the entire country. Other charts — Explorer, Fugawi, Navionics, and others covering the entire planet — can be purchased from the iNavX in-app chart store, delivering, "the largest set of marine navigation charts, maps, and weather forecasts directly through an app."

The company now has more than 100,000 customers who use the app a total of 3.5 million times per year, according to Steingold. He sees the app as a supplement or redundancy device to a standard chartplotter, but it works just like one, displaying current position in real-time using a mobile device's built-in GPS, as well as plotting course, bearing, and waypoints.

"We respect that navigators have their own preferences for the tools they use to the charts they prefer, which is why we are the first app to give users a choice," he says. "While most apps can only distribute either their own charts or free NOAA charts, iNavX is the most versatile and feature-rich navigation app available."

Supporting NMEA data over TCP/IP, iNavX also integrates with external GPS, AIS receivers and transponders, and networked instruments including depth, speed, wind, engine data, and battery voltage meters. Users can easily manipulate data by panning, zooming, and rotating charts, and also downloading GRIB weather forecasts.

The app can be used on multiple devices, and is available for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPads from the App Store and priced at $24.99. inavx.com
