Retired Atlantic Hurricane Names

Hurricane names repeat every 6 years. Storms which are costly or deadly are "retired" for sensitivity reasons (substantial life or financial loses). Storms that fall in to this category are discussed annually by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization, who remove the offending name(s) from the list and select another to replace it. For example, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
