The political axiom that "all politics is local" should be taken to heart, especially when it comes to waterway issues. Local citizens and local governments are very protective of their local waterways and for good reason — waterways are the lifeblood of many communities.

Boat owners have a big stake in what goes on in the community where they live and boat. Local ordinances passed in meetings that are poorly publicized or attended by boaters can have a major impact on boating. Is a new restriction being considered? Is a municipal marina going to be sold? Where do your boating fees and taxes go?

While BoatU.S. focuses on federal and major state boating issues, local boaters are in the best position to address what's going on in their home waters because local lawmakers want to hear from their local constituents. This guide to "grassroots" lobbying and action is based on years of experience by the BoatU.S. staff in handling boating issues at all levels of government. It's meant to be an overview of the tools and techniques available. Not every approach will work in every case. Nonetheless, boaters may pick and choose from this guide any tactic that will help strengthen boating in their community or resolve a boating problem.
