CONTEST GUIDELINES and RULES

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION A wide variety of projects and approaches are eligible for the BoatUS Recreational Boating Access Award. Examples include: creative public/private partnerships, changes in land use planning or permitting processes, tax incentives, legislation/public ballots, and publicity or public education.

The following criteria will be used in judging:

  1. Challenges (25%): What were the challenges to retaining or increasing waterway access in your area? Lack of funding? Poor community support? High price for land for waterway access projects? Little or no support for legislative solutions or land use zoning changes? An unorganized boating community?
  2. Impact (25%): How has waterway access for recreational boaters improved as a direct result of this project? What exactly did the candidate do to address waterway access and how has it changed? What is the long-term potential impact of this project?
  3. Awareness (25%): How has awareness of the waterway access issues increased as a result of this project or initiative? What actions have been taken to inform the public? (Hearings? Press releases? TV news interviews? Newsletters? — You may submit copies of press clippings or any other evidence.) What partnerships have been created or used to address the issue?
  4. Repeatability (25%): Can this project be duplicated elsewhere? Could someone else re-create or adapt this approach to address their own waterway access situation?
