Robert W. Davis - 1932 – 2009
Retired Michigan Congressman and long-time member of the BoatU.S. National Advisory Council, Bob Davis, passed away October 16, after a brief illness. Davis, who as ranking member of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee was instrumental in defeating the recreational boat user fee tax in 1992, served seven terms in Congress.
Born in Marquette, Michigan, Davis served in the state legislature for 12 years before being elected to Congress in 1978 to represent the First District of Michigan, one of the largest, geographically, in the U.S. It includes the state’s entire Upper Peninsula, bordering Lakes Superior and Michigan, and the northeastern third of the Lower Peninsula, bordering Lake Huron. An avid boater, he was always a champion of the Wallop-Breaux Trust Fund while in Congress and was a Past Commodore of the National Potomac Yacht Club.
Davis is survived by his wife, Brook, and five children. Appropriately enough, he is buried on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bob Davis Fund at Northern Michigan University, which he attended in 1950 and 1952.
