Toms Tips About Going Up the Mast

By Tom Neale, 6/9/2011

1. Always assume the line holding you is going to break.

2. Have at least a second safety line and have a deck helper regularly take up its slack as you ascend and let it out as you descend, keeping it secured at all times.

3. A harness is also important and you should keep it secured, but remember, if your line breaks you’ll need that second line to get back down safely.

4. Take with you a small diameter line, long enough to reach down to deck and back so that you can rig a hoist to bring up tools or gear that you hadn’t expected to need.
