Tom’s Tips About Class B AIS

By Tom Neale, 5/1/2008

1. A Class B AIS unit can give you valuable information about other vessels equipped with Class B or Class A and this information can be displayed to you on a compatible chart plotter or other hardware with compatible software. The ACR unit comes with a simple program that can give basic information on a computer screen, if you don’t have other compatible hardware and software. Class B AIS can also give other boats equipped with Class A or B AIS valuable information about you.

2. Even with AIS, all other means of prudent navigation should be utilized.

3. Class B units are now being successfully used in various countries outside the US.

4. Writing to government officials DOES often help. If you want to contact the FCC commissioners to express your feelings as to whether they should approve Class B AIS for us, you can go to the FCC website and send comments. (http://www.fcc.gov/contacts.html) Following is a list of the Commissioners and their email addresses.
Chairman Kevin J. Martin: KJMWEB@fcc.gov
Commissioner Michael J. Copps: Michael.Copps@fcc.gov
Commissioner Jonathan S. Adelstein: Jonathan.Adelstein@fcc.gov
Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate: dtaylortateweb@fcc.gov
Commissioner Robert McDowell: Robert.McDowell@fcc.gov
