Toms Tips About Neat Stuff
By Tom Neale, 5/13/2010
1. Product manufacturers regularly send out press releases about their new and/or improved products. This is very helpful because we all want to know about the new developments that can help to make our boating safer and more fun.
2. I’ve found that many product reviews in magazines are basically a regurgitation of press releases. Magazines need to do that to help get the word out and I consider this to be a service to the reader. But I try not to base my buying decisions solely on this type of releases and reviews.
3. Frequently the person who writes the review either has never had the product in his or her hands, or has played with it only very briefly for the purpose of writing the article. This isn’t the best way to judge a product. It doesn’t equate to real world use in realistic circumstances for which the product was made, over a period of time.
4. When you read a product review, try to read between the lines to get an idea if it’s based on a press release sent out by a hopeful manufacturer, or actual experience in the field.
