Tom Neale has spoken before many groups around the country and in Canada . A few of these include the Sailing Adventure" Series in California, "The International Sailors' Series" in Toronto, Trawler Port, and the Safety at Sea Seminars at the U.S. Naval Academy. He's spoken at many owners' rendezvous including Island Packet, Silverton/Mainship, Catalina, Jeanneau, Hunter, Beneteau and Sabre. Boat show appearances have included the Sail America shows at Atlantic City , St. Petersburg , Chicago , and Oakland ; The Seattle Boat Show, the US Sail and Power shows at Annapolis , the Newport Sail and Power Show and the Miami Boat Show.
Tom has led group cruises and taught seminars during the cruises. He and Mel have conducted their " Cruising School " in numerous locations.
Tom served for many years as Editor at Large, On Watch Columnist and Boat of the Year Judge and Coordinator for Cruising World Magazine . He founded a cruising newsletter, Cruising Coast and Islands . He authored All in the Same Boat published by McGraw Hill and Chesapeake Bay Cruising Guide, Upper Bay , published by Wescott Cove Publishing Company. Tom is Technical Editor for Soundings for which he writes the column “Sea Savvy” and is Editor at Large for PassageMaker Magazine.
Tom got his first boat at age 9. He and Mel have lived and cruised aboard since 1979. Melanie and Carolyn, their daughters, lived aboard since birth and were home schooled while cruising from pre-school through twelfth grade. They are now graduated from college. The family does almost all of the maintenance and repair work aboard, for all systems of their complex vessel. They cruise almost continuously, primarily along the East Coast and in the Bahamas , stopping at many communities along the way, traveling thousands of miles per year. They have spent 19 winters in the Bahamas.
