Shallotte Inlet AICW Crossing Dredging:
The Dredge WILKO will be conducting dredging operations in the AICW at the Shallotte Inlet Crossing (33.907229°-78.383899°) from 20 March until 13 April, 2014. The dredge and assisting vessels MISS LEANNE and PROUD MARY will monitor VHF-FM channels 13, 16 and 78. A Floating rubber and submerged polyethylene pipeline associated with dredging operation will traverse southwesterly and upland along west shoreline of Shallotte Inlet to the Ocean Isle Fill Placement Area near Shallotte Blvd. Pipeline, vessels and established crossings will be visibly lighted and marked with floating buoys in accordance with Coast Guard regulations. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution in the area, transit at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake, and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made with dredge plant. Channel Restriction at the Gilmerton Bridge Update
Elizabeth River Southern Branch, Chesapeake, VA
From 6:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. daily until August 3, 2014, two barges will occupy the entire channel at the Gilmerton Bridge (36.775082° -76.294999°) for demolition work leaving no clearance for safe passage of vessels. Mariners needing to pass must provide a two-hour advanced notice by calling the bridge tender at (757)485-5488 or via VHF channel 13. Additionally, the Gilmerton Bridge continues to operate per 33 Code of Federal Regulations 117.997(j) for mariners needing a bridge opening. The fender system work at the Gilmerton Bridge scheduled from March 24 until June 20, 2014 that was advertised on the previous Marine Safety Information Bulletin number 14/005 has been delayed. It is anticipated that the work may begin during the week of April 7, 2014 and last three months long. A notification will be distributed via e-mail with an updated Marine Safety Information Bulletin and via a Broadcast Notice to Mariners on VHF channel 13 as soon as a firm date is identified. Moreover, an environmental containment cell around the pier and its fender system will be in place until the project's conclusion on or about August 3, 2014 to facilitate additional demolition work. The containment cell is rigidly connected to the existing bridge fender with its own fender system consisting of 8 inch x 8 inch timber bumpers with recessed connections,thereby reducing the bridge's horizontal clearance from approximately 125 feet to 124 feet.
Gilmerton Bridge Info: Vertical Clearance for the new Gilmerton Bridge when closed is 35 feet above MHW. Gilmerton Bridge monitors marine channel 13 as do all the bridges, locks and commercial traffic in this area. Gilmerton Bridge restrictions from 33CFR117.997(c) are listed here:
(c) The draw of the Gilmerton (US13/460) bridge, mile 5.8, in Chesapeake:
(1) Shall open on signal at any time for commercial vessels carrying liquefied flammable gas or other hazardous materials.
(2) From 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays:
(i) Need not open for the passage of recreational or commercial vessels that do not qualify under paragraph d)(2)(ii) of this section.
(ii) Need not open for commercial cargo vessels, including tugs, and tugs with tows, unless 2 hours advance notice has been given to the Gilmerton Bridge at (757)-485-5488.
(3) Shall open on signal at all other times.
All Aboard Florida:
The proposed addition of 16 daily round trip train runs by "All Aboard Florida" (private service owned and operated by FECI, Florida East Coast Industries) between Miami and Orlando has the local tourism boards very excited and a few boaters' groups upset. It would utilize the current FEC tracks (with improvements) between Miami and Cocoa, with new tracks from there to Orlando International Airport. Stations would be in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando. With 32 additional daily train crossings of busy waterways there will be waiting boats backing and filling in already congested areas while the trains cross. The three places where FEC bridges cross waterways are the busy New River in Ft. Lauderdale with its steady stream of all sizes of boats and strong current through narrow concrete banks, the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter and the St. Lucie River at the east end of the Okeechobee Waterway in Stuart. US Army Corps of Engineers Websites for AICW Surveys and Reports
Despite the federal government reduction in funding, the USACE, in our opinion, does a really good job at surveying and recording depths in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW). They may not be able to dredge every little shoal, but at least they let you know where the shoals are so you can plan accordingly. Some areas in North Carolina are currently being dredged or are scheduled to be dredged soon. So, before you get too excited about the shallow depths reported by some fellow cruisers, check out the latest surveys at the following:

Charleston Area Dredging:
Marcol Dredge Company will commence dredge operations on or about March 11, 2014 in the vicinity of Patriot's Point (32.784916°-79.911612°) and will be pumping dredge sediment to the south end of Daniel's Island. The Dredge CAPTAIN JOE will monitor VHF-FM channels 66A and 16. Operations will continue 24/7 until approximately April 15, 2014. For more details contact Marcol Dredge Superintendent (843) 747-2177. Snowbirds: South Carolina Shoaling Reminder:
The following three areas of AICW shoaling continue to be included in the latest USCG 7th District LNM Week 010/2014. Check the websites given above as well as local sources for updated information.
The ACOE of Charleston, South Carolina has reported the location of severe shoaling in the AICW South of McClellanville, South Carolina. This area of severe shoaling is most significant between and near Winyah Bay-Charleston Harbor Daybeacon 35A (LLNR 34237) (33-04-35.030N, 079-27-43.780W) and Winyah Bay-Charleston Harbor Daybeacon 37 (LLNR 34240). Further information can be found on the ACOE Charleston website at www.sac.usace.army.mil. The ACOE has no future plans for dredging due to budget restrictions. Mariners are advised to transit the area with extreme caution.

The ACOE of Charleston, South Carolina had just finished an official survey of the AICW from Charleston, SC to Beaufort. Two patches of severe shoaling exist; the first appearing at the northeastern tip of the Ashepoo-Coosaw Cutoff near Ashepoo-Coosaw C/O LT 177 (LLNR 35195) (32-31-27.381N, 080-28-56.149W). The other area is at the southwestern tip of the Ashepoo-Coosaw C/O between Ashepoo-Coosaw C/O DBN 180 (LLNR 35195.3) and Ashepoo-Coosaw C/O DBN 185 (LLNR 35205.2). Beach Marina Submerged Pipeline:
Saltmarsh I, will be anchoring an 8" submerged pipeline across the entrance to Beach Marine (30.289278° -81.417867°) in Jacksonville, FL on the north side of Beach Blvd just off the ICW March 25, 2014. The submerged pipeline will be anchored on bottom at a depth of approx 12-15' below surface. The purpose of pipeline is to convey solids to Beach Marine spoils site from south side of Beach Blvd bridge residential development. The pipeline will not impede boat traffic. St. Lucie Inlet Dredging Update, Peck Lake Anchorage NOT an Anchorage:
Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting Co., LLC will continue dredge operations with Dredge "CAPTAIN AJ FOURNIER" in the channel at St Lucie Inlet and the adjoining impoundment basin to their authorized depths. Material will be loaded into hopper barges and transported approximately 5.5 miles south of the inlet, down the Intracoastal Waterway, to Pecks Lake (27.117365° -80.144243°), where the barge unloader "Bean 20" will be moored. The dredge material will then be pumped onto the beach through a submerged pipeline. The dredging activities will extend approximately 300 feet eastward and approximately 2,300' westward from the entrance of the jetties. The dredge will be supported by the crew launch/survey vessel "Cape Elizabeth". All vessels will monitor VHF channels 13, 16, and use 74 as the working channel. The dredge will operate 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Operations will wrap up on or about 01 May 2014. Jupiter Dredging Update (3/24/2014):
Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting Co., LLC will begin dredging operations on or about February 17 for the Jupiter/Carlin (26.928079°-80.066514°) Segment Beach Renourishment. Dredging Operations will be conducted in the offshore borrow area which is located approximately 7.9 miles south-southwest of the Jupiter/Carlin area in the vicinity of the Lake Worth Inlet. The Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge ATCHAFALAYA will be working northeast of the inlet and transit north towards Jupiter to a marked pump out location, south of the Jupiter Inlet jetties and approximately 2,000 linear feet from the shore, for beach placement. A floating pipeline along with a submerged pipeline will be placed to the shoreline. The pipeline will be marked with lighted buoys, for local traffic. The dredge will be supported by the crew launch/survey vessel "Sea Breeze" and various other vessels. All vessels will monitor VHF channels 16, 13, and use 76 as the working channel. The dredge will operate 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The work is scheduled to be completed on or about April 30, 2014. Okeechobee Waterway Update:
On March 25, 2014 at 2400 hours the lake level was reported at 13.68 feet and the navigational depths were reported at 7.62 feet for Route 1 (26°58'32.23"N, 80°38'22.92"W) and 5.82 feet for Route 2 (Rim Route) (26°47'0.61"N, 26°47'0.61"N). Okeechobee Waterway, Ft. Denaud Bridge Manual Operation Schedule:
The Fort Denaud Swing Bridge (26.744880° -81.510466°), Ft Denaud, Hendry County, Florida has an equipment failure and is operating manually. Starting 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014 through May 15, 2014, the bridge will open once an hour on the top of the hour from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. From 8:01 p.m. to 7:59 a.m. the bridge will open if at least three hours advance notice if given to 863-673-2974. (7th District LNM Week 10/2014)
Navy Ops off Lake Worth:
The US Navy, South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility (SFOMF) will conduct operations in an area offshore Lake Worth, Florida for the planting of inert targets. The R/V HUGH SHARP operated by University of Delaware and a Dive Team working off of an Industrial Divers Corp Dive barge, will be conducting surface maneuvers and planting inert targets in the water immediately east and south of Lake Worth Inlet. The operations are scheduled within a period beginning on 0600 hrs 15 April to 2400 hrs on 24 April 2014. The vessel will be working between 50 and 650 feet of water approximately .5NM to 3.5 NM off shore, and from 1/2NM – 9NM south of the Lake Worth Inlet. The targets will be planted in the following area bounded by the following coordinates. After deployment an ROV will be deployed to survey the field.

Four More Navy Ops off Ft. Lauderdale:
The United States Navy, South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility (SFOMF) and the R/V HUGH SHARP operated by the University of Delaware will be conducting surface maneuvers in the water immediately east and south of Port Everglades Inlet. The operations are scheduled within a period beginning on 0600 hrs 10 April to 2400 hrs on 13 April 2014. The R/V will be working between 450 - 550 feet of water approximately 2NM to 2.5NM off shore, and from 1/2NM – 1.5NM (26.085396°-80.097828°) south of Port Everglades Inlet. The R/V will be recovering cables on the sea floor and will be restricted in maneuverability. The cables will be re-deployed from the surface after repairs are made and will be planted on the sea floor. At the conclusion of the deployment, a ROV will be deployed for survey of the cables and surrounding area. All vessels are advised to stay well clear of the R/V during the deployment operations. At the conclusion of the deployment, a ROV will be deployed for survey of the equipment. All vessels are advised to stay well clear of the R/V during these recovery and deployment operations. The R/V will be recovering equipment on the sea floor and will be restricted in maneuverability. The equipment will be redeployed from the surface after modifications are made and will be planted on the sea floor. At the conclusion of the deployment, a ROV will be deployed for survey of the cables and surrounding area. All vessels are advised to stay well clear of the R/V during the deployment operations. The operations are scheduled within a period beginning on 0600 hrs 31 Mar to 2400 hrs on 2 April 2014. The vessel will be working between 450 – 550 feet of water approximately 2 - 2.5NM off shore, and from 1/2NM to 1.5NM south of Port Everglades Inlet (26.085396°-80.097828°). The M/V will be deploying an array that will be cabled to the sea floor and will be restricted in maneuverability. The array will deployed from the surface and will be planted on the sea floor. At the conclusion of the deployment, a ROV will be deployed for survey of the array. All vessels are advised to stay well clear of the M/V during these deployment operations. Remotely Operated Vehicle and Other Ops off Dania Beach:
Florida Atlantic University's Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering will deploy an autonomous/remotely operated vehicle. The system will be deployed via the R/V Oceaneer using diver assistance. The system includes a lighted buoy and cable line, landing platform and a target for the system. The only component that will remain above the surface is a 36 inch diameter orange buoy with Fl Y 2.5s characteristics. The orange lighted buoy will be connected to a steel cable line leading down to an anchor on the seafloor. Approximately 10 feet away the landing platform will be anchored, another 10 feet away from the platform will be (2) 1x1 foot PVC squares sitting on the seafloor with a hockey puck like object as the target. The system will remain in place for a period of three weeks from approximately March 14 – April 4, 2014. The site location will be set up in a 20ft x 20ft square in approximate position 26-07-12.36N/080-05.34.22W as the center point for the area used. During the 3-week testing phase the AUV/ROV will be retrieved multiple times from the water and guided back to the R/V Oceaneer via diver assistance. Mariners are to avoid close proximity or any other interference of the lighted buoy, its surrounding area and the R/V at all times. The R/V can be reached on VHF Channels 16, 9 and 14. Florida Atlantic University's Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering will deploy in an area offshore Fort Lauderdale, Florida a temporary small self-contained vessel weighing approximately 1,000lbs and is six feet long, three feet wide and drafts three feet. The vessel is yellow with Fl Y 2.5s characteristic and will be moored approximately 2NM southeast of Port Everglades Inlet in approximate position 26-01-32.980N/ 080-05-28.670W. The vessel will be collecting oceanographic data and will be moored in approximately 60 feet of water 1.25NM offshore from approximately March 17 – April 3, 2014. Bakers Haulover Inlet AICW Dredging Update (03/24-2014):
Southwind Construction Corp. will commence dredging in the vicinity of Bakers Haulover Inlet (25.899571°-80.122970°) beginning on or about 18 March. The Dredge JENNIE LEA II and workboats Ann Kay & Viper will be on scene monitoring VHF-FM channels 13, 16 & 78. Operations will continue 24/7 until on or about April 5, 2014. Buoys may be temporarily disestablished to accommodate dredge operations and the channel may be restricted to vessel traffic. Submerged pipeline will be in designated areas then turn southerly toward the Bal-Harbor Beach placement site. Further information contact the Project Manager, Devon Carlock at (812) 867-7220. Biscayne Bay Buoy 6B was permanently disestablished in 2011. Biscayne Bay Buoy 6B still appears on navigational chart #11467. The aid does not exist. All mariners are advised to exercise caution while transiting the area. (7th District LNM Week 12/2014)
Major Florida Keys Lights Updates:
Carysfort Reef Light (LLNR 945) (25-13-18.735N, 080-12-41.106W) optic to be permanently discontinued from Carysfort Reef Light and a more reliable LED (Light-emitting diode) lantern installed onto the adjacent structure erected in the vicinity of Carysfort Light. The RACON will be permanently discontinued. The Carysfort Reef Lighthouse is unstable and the Coast Guard is unable to provide service to the light on the existing lighthouse due to safety concerns. The following change has been proposed to the aids to navigation system in the Straits of Florida. Sand Key Light (LLNR 1055) (24-27-14.180N, 081-52-39.016W) optic and RACON to be permanently discontinued from Sand Key Light. A more reliable LED (Light-emitting diode) lantern has been installed onto the adjacent structure erected in the vicinity of Sand Key Light. The RACON will be permanently discontinued. The Sand Key Lighthouse is unstable and the Coast Guard is unable to provide service to the light on the existing lighthouse due to safety concerns. (7th District LNM Week 11/2014)
Florida Hazards to Navigation:
Nine Mile Point LT 36 (LLNR 9750) (St. Johns River) is destroyed. The remains of the pile are leaning and are a hazard to navigation. A TRLB WR36, Fl Q R characteristics is set 10 yards channelward in position 29-46-27.965N 081-33-09.282W. Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution while transiting the area. The M/V TUG TILLY is sunk with a mast 6-8 feet sticking out of the water. A temporary lighted buoy has been temporarily established to navigate around the hazard. A TRLB with Fl Q R characteristics, 3NM in position 24-31-13.199N/081-49-50.819W is marking the TUG. Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution while transiting the area. The Coast Guard received a report of a slow speed sign that has been hit and poses a hazard to navigation. The hazard is on the southwest side of the Gandy Bridge in Pinellas County. Mariners are advised to transit the area with extreme caution. (7th District LNM Week 12/2014)
Caloosahatchee River Daybeacon 2 (LLNR 52160) (26-43-31.560N, 081-42-28.201W) is destroyed. The remains of the pile is partially submerged and is a hazard to navigation. Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution while transiting the area. (7th District LNM Week 11/2014)

You can "Search" a bridge name for previous East Coast Alerts that may contain information that is still current. Bridges that have vertical height reduced (or other severe restriction) will remain on this list until the restriction is removed.
JAX FEC RR Bridge: The Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad Bridge (30.322433°-81.665564°) across the St Johns River, Jacksonville, Florida, will be closed to navigation: from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, Thursday, April 3, Monday April 7, Wednesday, April 9 and possibly Friday, April 11, 2014 for repairs.
Main Street Bridge, St. Johns River, UPDATE: The Coast Guard has approved a temporary change to the operating schedule of the Main Street Bridge (30.322626° -81.658613°)across the St Johns River, Jacksonville, Florida, due to bridge repairs. From January 24 through December 30, 2014, the Main Street Bridge will open with a two hour advance notice between the 6:00 a.m. and 6:59 p.m. to the bridge tender either via VHF-FM channel 9 or by calling 904-891-2191. Between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. a four hour advance notice to the bridge tender will be required to receive an opening. During the painting operation the contractor will be placing scaffolding under the bridge which will reduce the vertical clearance of the bridge up to 10 feet. Superior Construction Company has advised the Coast Guard that they will be using a snooper truck as part of this operation which will reduce the vertical clearance to 22 feet at different locations. The snooper truck can be removed if 30 minutes advance notice is provided.
Update: There are no scheduled restrictions for next week, 3/24/14 – 3/29/14.
Please note these dates may change or be added due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather or equipment failure. Unless specifically identified in the schedule, mariners should anticipate the described opening restrictions are in effect. US 192 Bridge: M&J Construction Company will be repairing and painting the SR 500 (US 192) Bridge (28.082960° -80.591610°) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Canaveral, Florida (this bridge is actually the Melbourne Causeway Bridge between Melbourne and Indiatlantic). The vertical clearance of the 65 foot high bridge will be reduced by five feet slightly more than one-half the channel from September 3, 2013 through September 1, 2014. The contractor will maintain 65 ft of vertical clearance within a 45 ft horizontal clearance at all times on one side of the channel. Currently the contractor is working on the west side of the channel. Mariners are requested to proceed through the east side of the channel through this area.
Hobe Sound Bridge:1. Martin County, the bridge owner, of the Hobe Sound Bridge (27.064118° -80.122470°) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Hobe Sound, Martin Country, Florida, has advised the Coast Guard that they will be conducing bridge repairs starting in March 18, 2014 for approximately three weeks. The work is scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. This work will include a reduction of vertical clearance by 5 feet on half the channel and will include single-leaf operations with a two hour advance notice for a double-leaf opening. There may be floating equipment in the vicinity of the down span. Mariners are requested to proceed with caution.
2. Martin County, the bridge owner, of the Hobe Sound Bridge across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Hobe Sound, Martin Country, Florida, has advised the Coast Guard that they are planning on painting this bridge starting in May 2014. This work will include a reduction of vertical clearance by 5 feet on half the channel and may include single-leaf operations with a two hour advance notice for a double-leaf opening. There may be a barge located under the down leaf; but that determination has not been made at this time. This work in anticipated to start in May 2014 and is projected to end on August 2014.
East Las Olas Bridge, Update: The East Las Olas Bridge across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida is being repaired. The bridge is on the same operating schedule; but there may be short delays when equipment and personnel need to removed from the bridge for an opening. This work is expected to continue until May 1, 2014. Kiewit Infrastructure South Company, the East Las Olas Bridge (26.119285° -80.109001°), mile 1064 at Fort Lauderdale shall open a single-leaf on the quarter-hour only 24 hours a day, unless a four hour notice is provided to the bridge tender for a double-leaf opening. You may contact the bridge tender be calling 954-463-0842. The East Las Olas Bridge provides a vertical clearance of 24 ft in the closed position and a horizontal clearance of 40 feet with one-leaf in the down position. Kiewit Infrastructure South Company has advised that they will have a barge under the down span during these repairs. This bridge provides a horizontal clearance of 45 feet with one leaf open, a horizontal clearance of 60 feet with both leaves open and the barge in the channel and a horizontal clearance of 90 feet with all floating equipment removed from the waterway. Please advise the bridge tender if you need to have all floating equipment removed from the waterway when requesting a double-leaf opening.
South Fork, New River, Ft. Lauderdale: I-95 Bridge: Seminole Equipment is working on the I-95 Bridge (26.096434° -80.169002°) across the South Fork of the New River, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Due to painting operations the vertical clearance will be reduced by 5 feet from January 7, 2014 through April 2014. The containment system can be retracted by two feet if 24 hours notice is provided to the contractor.
CSX Railroad Bridge: The contractor working on the CSX Railroad Bridge (26.096456° -80.169348°) replacement across the South Fork of the New River mile 2.8, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida has requested to temporarily change the regulation governing the existing CSX Railroad Bridge. This temporary regulation change has been approved and has placed this bridge to an on demand schedule whereas the bridge will be placed in the closed to navigation position during certain portions of the construction operations with an open on demand schedule.
Mariners are requested to contact the bridge tender on VHF-FM channel 9 for opening and passing information.
The pile driving operation is scheduled to begin on February 14, 2014 on the north side of the channel with completion scheduled for June 3, 2014. The pile driving operation on the south side is scheduled to begin in August 2014.
The horizontal clearance of the CSX Railroad Bascule Bridge across the New River (South Fork) mile 2.8, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida has been temporarily reduced to 56 feet.
SE 17th Causeway Bridge: Coastal Marine Construction Inc, has been contracted by Florida Department of Transportation to replace the power/submarine cable of the SE 17th Street Causeway (E Clay Shaw) Bridge (26° 6'1.83"N, 80° 7'7.33"W) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. Due to the cable installation, the SE 17th Street Causeway will be placed on single-leaf opening during regularly scheduled opening with a three hour advance notice for a double-leaf opening from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Saturday between April 14 and August 30, 2014.
Ravenswood Road Bridge, Dania Cut-Off Canal: The Coast Guard has issued a Public Notice (PN) regarding the permit application for approval of location and plans to replace the Ravenswood Road Bridge (26.067957°-80.168714°) across the Dania Cut-Off Canal, mile 3.8, at Dania Beach, Broward County, Florida. Cortez Bridge: Quinn Construction will be performing work on the Cortez Bridge (27.467865°-82.693661°) across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Sarasota County, Florida from April 28, 2014 through January 22, 2015. From May 10 2014 through November 23, 2014, the bridge will be on a single-leaf opening schedule. A double-leaf opening will be available with a four hour notice to the bridge tender or by calling 941-722-7722. There will be floating equipment in and around the channel throughout the repairs.
USCG Fifth District
Coastal Waters from Shrewsbury River, New Jersey to Little River, South Carolina
Rt. 87 Atlantic City Bridge Repairs:
Mariners are advised that conduit installation will be performed at the Route 87 Bridge (39.385157° -74.421731°), at mile 0.6, across Absecon Inlet connecting Atlantic City with Brigantine City, in Atlantic County, NJ beginning March 10, 2014 through May 31, 2014. The work will consist of mounting a conduit along the north side of the roadway. Three conduits will be installed in the first bay between stringers S1 and S2, with the remaining three conduits placed in the 2nd bay between stringers S2 and S3. Conduits will be installed through the abutment back walls to tie into proposed manholes with the bridge approaches. The existing bridge geometry (horizontal and vertical clearances) will remain unchanged. Mariners should exercise caution when transiting the area. (5th District LNM Week 08/2014)
JFK Memorial Bridge Repairs Extended:
Mariners are advised that due to inclement weather conditions, repairs of the superstructure and piles are extended at the JFK Memorial Bridge (39.315156°-74.528436°), at mile 1.1, over Risley Channel in Borough of Longport, NJ through July 1, 2014. Safety netting and snooper cranes reduce the available vertical clearance to approximately 20 feet, above MHW. In addition, barges restrict and reduce the available horizontal clearance to approximately 50 feet. However, the navigable channel shall remain open with these restrictions. Barnegat Inlet Jetty Construction Safety Zone:
The Captain of the Port (COTP) Sector Delaware Bay is notifying mariners that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has contracted with Agate Construction to repair the Barnegat Inlet North Jetty (39.762116° -74.094546°) that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. These repairs will be starting on or about April 14, 2014 and could continue through November 2014. In order to maintain the safety of the boating public and the Agate Construction workers a safety zone may be established that encompasses the entire Barnegat Inlet. Within the Safety Zone No swimming, diving, fishing, mooring, nor anchoring are permitted. Vessels may only transit the zone one vessel at a time at minimum speed necessary to maintain steerage. Passing or overtaking other transiting vessels is not permitted. Mariners wanting to transit the safety zone with more than one vessel at a time must contact the Sector Delaware Bay Command Center 36 hours prior to the intended transit time at (215) 271-4807. Vessels needing to contact the on scene work barges can contact them on VHF Channel 16. Vessels should monitor VHF channel 16 for updated information on the operation. Philadelphia and Camden Dredging:
The Dredge ESSEX will be conducting dredging operations on the Deepwater Range from 25 March until 15 May, 2014. A pipeline will run from the dredge site through the Deep Water Anchorage to the Kilchook Disposal Area. The dredge will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. (Fifth District LNM Week 11/2014)
US 50 Bridge, Ocean City, MD, Inspections:
Mariners are advised that an engineering firm, on behalf of Maryland State Highway Administration, will be performing biennial inspections at the US 50 Bridge (38°19'56.00"N, 38°19'56.00"N), at mile 0.5, across Isle of Wight Bay (Sinepuxent Bay) at Ocean City, MD. All inspections will be performed, each day, during the week of March 31 through April 4, 2014 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The underside of the bridge will be accessed from the top of the bridge utilizing a snooper (specialized truck-mounted bridge inspection equipment). Additional testing of the movable span will be performed and will include multiple openings. A safety boat will also be used to perform channel depth measurement at the bridge. Inspection personnel and equipment will be working at the bridge during this period and will be in proximity to the navigable channel, do not anticipate any disruption to navigation traffic and will relocate from the navigation channel upon request for vessel passage. Severn and Bohemia River Bridge Inspections:
Mariners are advised that an engineering firm, on behalf of the Maryland State Highway Authority, will conduct underwater inspections during thecperiod from April 15 through May 31, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the following bridges:
A. US 50/301 Bridge across Severn River, at mile 4.3, at Annapolis, MD (39.004435° -76.504468°); and
B. MD-213 Bridge across Bohemia River, at mile 4.0, at Cayots, MD (39.460541° -75.869687°)
The actual onsite days will be dependent on the weather, channel conditions and the availability of the dive crew. A 25-foot boat, with an outboard motor, will be used during the inspection process. Inspection personnel and equipment will be in proximity to the navigable channels, do not anticipate any disruption to marine traffic and we will relocate from the navigable channels upon request for passage from any waterborne vessel. Brewerton Channel Dredging:
The Clamshell Dredge GL51 will be dredging the Brewerton Channel (39.180929° -76.447772°) from 04 March until 30 June, 2014. The dredges will be working on spuds and will be attended by the Tug TAFT BEACH. The Dredge will be accompanied by the scows GL401 and GL402. The scows will be transited to and from the dredging locations and the Cox Creek disposal site by Tug CAPTAIN DAN. Mariners are urged to transit at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and proceed with caution after passing arraignments have been made. Under no circumstances should mariners attempt to pass between the towing tug and scow while underway as the towing cable may not always be visible above the water. Baltimore Harbor Construction:
Mariners are advised that a construction project is scheduled to begin in Baltimore Harbor on April 7, 2014. The project for is located at the CNX bulkhead at Pier 2 Canton in Baltimore, MD (39.270149° -76.574386°). The work will occur for 3 weeks, Mondays through Saturdays, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. A barge mounted excavator will be on site, as well as a barge transporting rock to and alongside the excavator barge. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Underwater Inspections:
Mariners are advised that engineering firms, on behalf of the Maryland Transportation Administration (MDTA), will perform underwater inspections at the William P. Lane Jr. (38.975975° -76.375666°), Memorial (East Suspension) across Chesapeake Bay, at mile 138.0, between Sandy Point and Kent Island MD. Beginning February 17, 2014 through June 1, 2014, the inspections will be performed at the Eastbound Bay Bridge piers, take place from a 26-foot or 41-foot work vessel that will be tied-off to the bridge piers, be in the channel from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and have a 3-6 person dive crew. The inspection team boat will work with vessel traffic so as not to impede the waterway. Mariners should exercise caution when transiting the area. (5th District LNM Week 06/2014)
Safety At Sea Seminar Regulated Navigation Area in Severn River:
Mariners are advised that the U.S. Naval Academy will sponsor its annual Safety-at-Sea Seminar in the Severn River adjacent to the U. S. Naval Academy, between the Naval Academy (SR-450) Bridge and Triton Light (LLNR 19780), on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. The event includes on-water activities involving small boats and other vessels, a low-flying helicopter and pyrotechnics demonstrations. As described in 33 CFR Sec. 100.501, a regulated area is established for all waters of the Severn River, from shoreline to shoreline, bounded to the northwest by the Naval Academy (SR-450) Bridge and bounded to the southeast by a line drawn from the Naval Academy Light at latitude 38°58'39.5- N, longitude 076°28'49- W thence easterly to Carr Point, MD at latitude 38°58'58- N, longitude 076°27'41- W. The regulated area will be enforced from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on March 29, 2014. The effect will be to restrict vessel traffic on certain waters of the Severn River. The Coast Guard Patrol Commander may forbid and control the movement of all vessels in the regulated area. Coast Guard vessels enforcing this regulated area can be contacted on marine band radio VHF-FM channel 16 or 22A. When hailed or signaled by an official patrol vessel, a vessel in the area shall immediately comply with the directions given. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the area, citation for failure to comply, or both. Mariners are urged to schedule their transits on this waterway beyond the enforcement times. Bridge Inspections Spa Creek and Patuxent River Update:
Mariners are advised that engineering consultants, on behalf of Maryland State Highway Administration, have revised the scheduled for inspection of the structural, mechanical and electrical systems on movable bridges on the following new schedules:
1) MD-181 Bridge (38.972566° -76.485514°), at mile 0.4 across Spa Creek in Annapolis – in progress through 30 APR 2014 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.; and
2) MD-231 Bridge (38°30'45.37"N, 76°40'11.50"W), at mile 24.4, across Patuxent River in Benedict – the new schedule begins 27 MAR through 30 APR 2014 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Inspection personnel and equipment will be in proximity to the navigable channels, do not anticipate any disruption to marine traffic and will relocate upon request for passage from any waterborne vessels. Washington Channel Construction Update:
The first phase of construction comprises (in sequential order) Capital Yacht Club, District Pier, Transit Pier, Market Pier and Docks and the associated dock demolition and bulkhead repairs. The second phase of construction is anticipated to commence soon after completion of the first phase and comprises Mooring Field and East Potomac Day Dock, 7th Street Pier, Gangplank Marina, Pier 3, Pier 4 and the associated dock demolition and bulkhead repairs.

Tangier Island Channel and Harbor Dredging:
The Dredge BOVIDAE will be conducting dredging operations in the Tangier Island Channels (37.829251°-75.992282°) and Harbor Basin from 05 March until 30 April, 2014. The dredge and assisting vessels will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. Gwynns Island Bridge Work and Restrictions:
NEW: Mariners are advised, to facilitate mechanical repairs, the State Route 223 Bridge (37.495024° -76.308216°) across Milford Haven Inlet, mile 0.1, at Hudgins, VA will remain in the closed position to vessels requiring an opening on two weekends in March, from 4 a.m., on Saturday through 4 a.m. Sunday. The dates of the closures are March 15-16 and March 29-30. In the closed position to vessels, the available vertical clearance is reduced to approximately 12 feet above MHW. Vessels that can pass under the drawbridge without an opening may do so at any time. Mariners should adjust their transits accordingly and use extreme caution when transiting the area. Bonner Bridge Work:
Mariners are advised that work will continue through May 31, 2014 for scour, bridge bent, and deck repairs at the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge (35-46-24.955N, 075-31-58.714W)across Oregon Inlet, at mile 0.9 in Dare County, NC. A mobile hydra lift platform will be utilized from the top of the bridge in various locations and will temporarily reduce the vertical clearance outside the navigable channel by approximately 5 feet. Small sectional barges and a small crane will be utilized north of the navigational channel for scour protection measures between bents 162 to 166. Bogue Sound Ordnance Removal:
Mariners are advised that CH2M Hill, on behalf of the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic (NAVFAC) and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, will conduct ordnance recovery/removal on Wood Island, approximate position 34-41.0 N,076-57.0 W, in Bogue Sound from March 17, 2014 until March 28, 2014. There will be an area patrolled by support boats to ensure the safety of mariners that extends 180 yards from the shore of Wood Island for unintentional detonation operations and 610 yards for intentional detonation operations. North Carolina AICW Shoaling Reminder:
The following are a few of the continuing areas of shoaling in NC AICW waters. The first three are included in the most recent USCG 5th District LNM Week 06/2014, except as noted; the fourth is an area reported by cruisers. Check the USACE surveys at the sites given above and local sources for updated information.

3. Browns Inlet Crossing, North of the Onslow Beach Bridge, (34.598523°-77.241191°) Mile 238. Shoaling, shifting channel and often different markers than charted. This is a good example of many problem areas where an inlet, creek or river flows into or across the AICW causing frequent shoaling and changes.

Damage to Key Aid to Navigation in Nantucket Sound:
CAUTION WHEN TRANSITING IN VICINITY OF BUOY 17 (NOAA DATA BUOY 44020) Recent repeated damage to buoy 17 (NOAA data buoy 44020) (41.443 N 70.186 W) in Nantucket Sound has made this key aid unavailable for extended periods of time, reducing navigation safety. Mariners are asked to be particularly vigilant when navigating in the vicinity of buoy 17 in Nantucket Sound. Buoy 17 is a key aid to navigation in Nantucket Sound. It sits approximately halfway between Nantucket Sound and Hyannis, and marks the southern boundary of the Main Channel. Perhaps most importantly it hosts a suite of electronic instruments that provide real-time weather data readily accessible to all mariners. In recent months the buoy has been badly damaged twice, apparently hit by unidentified vessels passing by. In each case the metrological instruments were seriously damaged and stopped working for weeks or months until technicians could be scheduled. And in each instance expensive and labor-intensive repairs were required. All mariners should use extreme caution when operating in the vicinity of buoy 17 in Nantucket Sound. Submarine Power Transmission Cable Repair:
A contractor for NSTAR electric utility, Caldwell Marine, will be conducing emergency submarine power transmission cable repair operations from approximately March 19 to March 28, 2014, in Vineyard Sound in the vicinity of 41° 29.21N /070° 36.37W (north of West Chop). Operations will be conducted seven days per week, 24 hours per day, during this period. The vessels on location will be the tug PATRICK HUNT and a 160 foot dive barge. The dive barge will be set on a four-point mooring with white surface buoys set out approximately 1/2 NM from the barge. The operations will be carried out on a 24-hour schedule. The barge, mooring buoys and the tug PATRICK HUNT will be properly lit for nighttime operations. During the operation the barges will be unable to move from their respective moorings under normal circumstances. All passing vessels are requested to maintain a minimum separation of 1/2 NM from the barge and tug PATRICK HUNT. Tug PATRICK HUNT will be monitoring VHF channels 16 and 13. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of West Chop, Vineyard Sound, during this submarine power transmission cable infrastructure installation.
