We just came through the last lock of the Erie Canal and are docked at the wall in Waterford, NY. Only one more lock to go (the Troy Federal Lock). After that lock, we will have gone through 107 locks since May - - we are pretty good at it by now! We plan to stay in Waterford for at least 2 nights. Because the NY harbor has been closed, many boats backed up on the Hudson River and into the Erie and Champlain Canals over the past week. However, now that the harbor is open (although understandably on a limited, controlled basis), many boats have started to move again. Although we could have made it to and through NY by Friday (with 10 - 12 hour cruising days), we have made the decision to hang out in Waterford for a few days and aim to travel through NY on Monday or Tuesday of next week.
We stayed at Lock 7 last night (Tuesday). It is a very quiet and calm lock to stay due to a large bay area south and west of the lock. We would recommend it (no electric or water). The two previous night were spent at Lock 11 (which does have 15 AMP electric service). Surprisingly, we are seeing a large number of Canadian boats heading south to Florida and/or the Bahamas. We wonder if there is anyone left in Toronto. Hey, we saw a bald eagle this morning! We are not looking forward to the salt water again. However, if Brian does not get a shower today (the diesel fuel is starting to smell better than him!), I am going to push him overboard regardless of what water we are in! We may be unable to e-mail for a couple of days. There aren't a whole lot of options along the Hudson River. At this time, we will not be stopping in or around a town until Forked River, NY (~5 days). We will be in touch. Jeri and Brian
