Red Dust
July 6, 2001
Fishing
boats in Puerto Colom
We anchored
in the protected harbor of Port Colom last night. The wind came up out
of the south and we awoke this morning to find the boat completely covered
in a fine red Sahara-dust! A little treat from North Africa for us. The
Sahara-dust was absolutely everywhere inside and out. We went to work
immediately using our salt water anchor wash-down hose attached to our
longer freshwater hose to completely wash down the boat and rigging with
saltwater (seems strange, when every chance we have to wash the salt off
with fresh water, we do) and then we washed, dusted and vacuumed inside!
But we will see red dust for days, if not weeks, I am sure. And next time
the wind is expected to turn, I will close all the ports and hatches,
no matter how hot it is!
