Clear Empty
Water
July 3, 2001
Our friends
have come and gone. We had a wonderful time as we explored inland, taking
a narrow gauge train to the only decent port on the north coast, Soller,
a charming harbor, especially when viewed from land; and driving into
the greenest mountains we have seen since we left the states, to Valdemossa,
a magnficent monastery where George Sand and Frederic Chopin spent one
not so magnificent (as she described it) winter.
We had an
equally wonderful time sailing to the cliff-ringed calas, swimming in
the warm, crystal clear water and climbing on the rocks for magnificent
views. The water in the Med is some of the clearest we have seen anywhere.
We can see our anchor lying on the bottom in over 20 feet of water. Unfortunately
there is not a lot more to see. There are few fish and, of course, since
this is not the tropics, no coral. We did find a small octopus one day.
When we dove down towards him, he squirted a large black cloud and quickly
swam away.
