Rare Birds -
July 4, 2001
Now it is
the Fourth of July and we are on a mooring encircled by rugged hills in
a fjordlike bay of turquoise water on the national park island of Cabrera,
29 miles south of Palma. This is a nature preserve with several species
of rare birds. As we were mooring, I started to shoo away a gull swooping
down on us. I told him not to poop on my deck. Sid told me to show the
bird some respect since he was a rare Audoiuns Gull. We have been struck
by the paucity of birdlife in Spain, even common species, so it was especially
nice to see this one, just as described in the information we had been
given on the island's flora fauna.
