Tom’s Tips for Staying Warm

1. Night watches may be the times when you’re most likely to get too cold. You’re not moving as much, your body may be accustomed to sleeping at the time anyway, and, if course, the ambient temperature is usually colder.

2. Make yourself stand up behind the wheel, at periodic intervals not too far apart. Stomp your feet and clasp your fingers to see how they feel. Numbness is a bad sign.

3. We believe in using good Type 1 offshore life preservers. They’re reasonably comfortable, they provide some warmth, they’ll probably do better floating the extra clothing weight if you go over, and they have all the other safety features required for a Type 1.
