Tomís Tips on Hypothermia

1. Go to and type the word ďhypothermiaĒ into the search box in the upper right corner of the home page. Itíll bring up a lot of information about the issue, including how it can affect you and things to do. Itís a good start in your familiarization with this problem.

2. Unless youíre familiar with its symptoms and you are alert, it can be difficult to recognize the onset of hypothermia in yourself or other people with you. Itís important that you know how to help someone whoís suffering from this condition. Doing the wrong thing can worsen the problem.

3. The effects of hypothermia can be worse on some people than on others, depending on varying factors, including general state of health.

4. People can become victims of hypothermia without going in the water. Cold air can be enough to cause the condition.

5. Cold water may be worse, because your clothing wonít protect you from it, but when you get out and become exposed to cold air, and, or worse, cold wind, the situation can accelerate rapidly.

6. After that day I always carried with me, on my board, a hand held VHF. I bought a Pelican 2060 case with padding, and strapped it to the aft most foot strap on the board. The case isnít supposed to be deep dive water proof, but it is Pelican tough and never leaked. We also always carry the VHF in this case in the kayaks and dinghy. Pelican also makes other size small cases that can serve this function, such as the 1010 Micro Case which we use for a cell phone.
