Candlepower
-
Whenever
I see a flashy box in a store containing a light with a huge candlepower
rating alleged on the side of the box, I’m very
skeptical that it’s a good light.
-
Think about it: 3 million candlepower? Exactly what are we talking
about here?
-
A beam, to help you, must travel through dark and often cut through
mist and illuminate an object far away, with minimum of distortion,
such as a dark area in the middle of the beam.
-
This is very different from making a great rather indiscriminate
glow in the dark.
-
There
are relatively precise ways to accurately measure the effectiveness
of a light’s
beam in illuminating a surface at a given distance. Often these
measurements are given as Lux or Lumens.
-
Like
so many other things on a boat, a good light can save your life
and/or your boat. Usually you get what you pay for. Don’t
buy cheap unless you have reliable verifiable information that it
really is, nevertheless, good.
