IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THIS MESSAGE BOARD

We have recently made changes to our Forums to restrict posting to BoatUS Members. In order to keep the functionality consistent across all of our website's forums we are updating the Boat Groups Forum.

You do NOT have to be a BoatUS Member to read postings and threads, but you must be a Member or Join the Association to post or reply to a topic.

To implement this change, we have deleted all Cookies. You will have to Log In and Verify your BoatUS Membership to post.

If you have any problems logging in, use the Forgot Password link: http://www.boatus.com/boatgroups/forum/forgotten_password.as p If you need to look up your Member Number CLICK HERE.

If you are not a BoatUS Member but would like to Join, CLICK HERE.

We regret having to limit participation in this manner, but monitoring inappropriate behavior, including spam, has become an undue burden on company resources. We hope by implementing this change, the forum can return to the function for which it was intended - as a resource for boaters to exchange pertinent information.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sounds like a good thing to me, I know the spammers would go wild at times on here, this should put a stop to most of that.

Wow.... You guys have totally missed the "boat" here.

Yes, I am a BOATUS member.

Your Forum software works like some 10 year old code
written by an intern (timeout upload errors - it can't even
resize photos, etc.). Now you want to reduce the user
base? Really? You don't want people to stare at your logo 5
or 10 times a week?

If you have a spam issue, deal with the issue. Don't throw
the baby out with the bathwater.

Jim

Hi Brian,

I am working on posting an essay about raw water pump overhauling where I want to upload some 15 photos onto the Catalina forum. I suceeded in uploading one image, but further attempts resulted a message indicating no access.  The photos are within the 100k size limit. Can you please sort this out? This has been an ongoing issue. Wonder what the issues involved are?

Thanks, Roy (Diver)

Hi Diver,
Were you attempting to post the 15 photos in separate
posts? Because I know we tightened the anti-spam rules to
not allow I believe 7 posts in 5 minutes (by one user). I
haven't personally tried uploading 15 photos at one time
either, it may have been an issue with server load,
depending on what time of day you attempt to do it. I'll
keep an eye on the board's performance and see if I can
duplicate the problem.

Have you tried using an outside photo sharing site, such as
photobucket.com, imgur.com, minus.com, etc? They're
easy to upload to, don't restrict the size of the picture,
create thumbnails of the image, and provide easy forum
code links (using the [ IMG] tag)

Appreciate you getting back to me Brian, thanks! On your question: was I trying to post on 15 seperate posts? Answer: nope, though I think get the concept.

On the Catalina thread, you will see I posted the initial 1st 'chapter' for the 'Pump' piece with the intent of going as far as I could with the photo uploads. I know there's some sort of unpredictable Forum upload gatekeeper beyond even the rules in-place. From your note- sounds like your not real sure either. The result so far has been one photo uploaded...a good start as I pretty much assumed multiple posts would be needed to complete the essay. I did something like this some years back on the Catalina forum for a piece about a Marine engine valvejob. I think this was before your time. If I remember right, we did just what you're suggested...loaded the whole thing, text and photos onto a remote site with a link on the thread. It was a huge piece, but Boat US's man at the time pulled it off. You might be able to find it on the tread, 3-4 years back.

Anyway, what I'm hoping to do with this much smaller essay is to post it, in its entirety on the thread doing photo uploads in several chapters over the next week or so. If I can post 7 photos and add the text as I go, I'll be done.  That's the plan anyway...I'm hoping the essay will draw some Catalina guys back.

Frankly, I think what you guys decided to do made sense. There were too many posts about things unrelated to boats- forest fires, baby pictures and the like. Nice stuff, just not on subject...and it was growing...ugg.

Appreciate you watching over things...maybe the limited upload thing will work...if not, Maybe we can try the linking thing- Just want to see if the direct method will work if you keep an eye on things at your end.

Hi Brian,

I don't agree with JimInFla about the sophistication of the site's software.  The software certainly isn't perfect and things could be improved but overall it's better than most sites I have posted on.
