Guess I'll start this off.

Recently bought a 1988 31' Open. Been doing lots of tinkering and one of the projects trying to resolve is the battery setup. Currently we have two group 27 batteries, one for each engine and 2, two position (On/Off) battery switches under the cabin steps. The DC house service seems to run off the starboard battery and have drained the battery twice while at anchor. Question is want to modify so have seperate house batteries and battery for each motor, so 4 total. Thinking of adding two golf cart style batteries (6 volt in series) as the house system. Problem is can't figure out how to rewire. The wires go from battery to switch to engine and can't figure where the lead goes to the DC panel. Guess have to pull some other things apart. Anyone done this? How is yours set up? Thanks Ryan

 I own an '88   31' Tiara with 454 Crusaders and no generator since "97.

The panel power comes from the stbd switch, goes thru the engine compartment bulkhead to a 60 amp fuse holder and then to the DC 50 amp main circuit breaker. Get a copy of the owners manual and look at the DC electrical schematic. It's very good. I think the batteries go dead because the refrig. pulls about 10 amps, either that or your alternator regulator is bad. Do you have a deep cycle on the house side?

Thanks George, ended up replacing the house/starboard side with two 6volt (golf cart style) battiers wired in series? (can't keep series vs parallel straight).

Has worked great we have killed them even sitting at anchor for two full days/one night.

Over the winter would like to figure how to seperate the house side from engine starting and add another batt dedicated to starting for starboard motor .


Ever had a problem with a leak somewhere in the bow area, that runs down unde the v berth and to the front of dinette? Can't find the source, driving me nuts!

 I can help you with all those problems (Electrical design engineer). The leak in the bow can be either a leaking railing fitting (I had one of these) or an overflow from the anchor locker after a heavy rain when the drain hole is plugged(I had this problem too). I used 5200 to glue a baitwell screen over the hole and the overflow problem went away. I also took the railing base fitting loose, jacked it up and repacked it with 5200. No more leaks.
