I just bought a few days ago ($$ deposit left) a 1973 Formula Thunderbird. The seller said it has a Ford V8-302;MerCruiser, 888 outdrive;188hp. Is this all original specs or? Can anyone add to what I have. We are new to boats and would love to find out in more detail what we got

Thanks,

Ron

1973 Formula Thunderbird

not sure if this will help or not, i have a 1972 20' formula, mine has the 302, but has the volvo outdrive, i have been told that back then they used both merc and volvo outdrives, not sure on the unit you have or if its oem, but like said, been told they used both volvo and merc back those days, good luck and nice looking boat you got .

Thanks. Seller still has it. We agreed to have him fix a few things. Well see how it goes. I think the water pump (not sure correct name. That's what is is on a truck motor) on the motor is leaking. The battery was dead, wouldn't start. I left him a deposit and he agreed to fix it.

Now that outdrives have been discussed here, beware that  boatlover1025 might show up in here and start slamming Volvo.  Pay them no attention.  I believe they are on their way to a good banning & they deserve it.

all the boats i had before and still have two merc outdrives, there a good drive, personly like them alot, this boat i have now is a 1972 formula that i got off ebay in palm bay, fl, for 200 bucks, the hall is good the guy that had the boat before me put a regular discount auto parts starter on it, needless to say it woulnt run, the starter when tightend down was smashed into the flywheel and woulnt turn over, but it has a volvo outdrive, and i know nothing about them, we did have the boat running on the water, and the outdrive worked great.

so learning on the volvo's is the key, i dont know why some pos would come into any chat to slam one or another, heres the thing, if your drive is a merk , or a volvo whats the difference if it works for you ? gess theres kids that have nothing better to do than run there mouths on everything.

good luck on your boat, and dont listen to anyone saying anything negitive on any drive or boat.

I didn't end up buying it. The seller couldn't get it to run after spending $1170 on it. I got my $200 deposit back.

Kinda a slow topic, not much feedback here. But thought I would end it by saying thanks to who helpd out.
