Finally got fed up with nursing along my 8D's and replaced
them with Odysseys. Two Odyssey batteries will fit in the
same box as one 8D. Will spin the box around and gain
some "nice to have" foot space in the engine compartment.
(I don't call this an engine room. It's a compartment at
I've never had these old DD's start so fast! The Odyssey
batteries have nearly three times the cranking power of the
old 8D's and, by design, will also serve in a deep cycle
capacity (although I don't plan to use them in that
manner). No maintenance. A friend of mine has them in
his Bayliners and swears to me he hasn't laid eyes upon his
batteries in 7 years. So, I bit the bullet ($1,000) and
bought two. I'm getting too old to attempt, in any manner,
to lift out 8D batteries. The Odyssey batteries (which
replace the 8D) weigh in at 89 lbs. A manageable weight,
even for me. With my wife retiring in February, we plan on
doing more serious Bay cruising next year and within the
next two years, move aboard, so a good battery system is
now a necessity. A Deka 8D AGM is over $650 and
requires a battery charger designed for AGM batteries.
The Odyssey LOVES our old Pro Mariner chargers and you
can leave them on 24/7 without damage or overcharging.

A lot of money? You bet! Worth it? Well, I know three
motoryacht owners personally who have them and swear
they'll never own anything else.
