I have a 1985 Catalina 281 with leaking windows.

First the sides - anyone removed these frames?  I'm perplexed...start from the inside & work out, or outside going in.  Already have the exterior rubber gasket that covers the screws pulling away.  Peeled back inside head liner around windows to dry out.  Any recommendations?

I'd like to remove the window glass from the frames and have them anodized.  Tint the windows too.  Any sources for new window track stuff (looks like some kind of felt track in the extrusions)

Chris Parts seems to have some but till I get it apart its hard to tell which ones.

SECOND - Previous owner did a number on the forward fixed windows.  He removed them and glassed in.  Unfortunately he used press board, a single sheet of fiberglass and bondo to fair it.  Needles to say its a leaking mess.  Don't have the frames or windows.  Currently planning to redo the glassed in strategy with marine ply, epoxy, and paint.  Thought of using a sheet of 3/8 - 1/2" smoked plexiglass but gets expensive and willeventually leak again.  It would be nice to have some light and visibility forward though.  Any ideas?

Hey Jsten,

I did one of mine a few weeks ago. I have a 1986 293, so I don't have the front windows that you have, but I do have the same side ones. I took pictures as I went. You can see mine in th Catalina Forum at http://www.boatus.com/boatgroups/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8 28&PN=1&TPN=166

You may want to look through the other posts too several guys over there have 281's that have done the front windows too. Take a look at Nauti Cat's removal at http://www.boatus.com/boatgroups/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8 28&PN=0&TPN=32

The Catalina forum is a great user group for people that have our boats. I have learned a TON from them in the 2 months I have owned mine.

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the links.  That helps much.
This forum is a great resource and helped me settle on the Catalina I bought.
Only rub is the good info is buried in the Catlalina owners thread.  Without a link its hard to find what you need among the 171 pages.

Next trip to the yard I'll snap some pix and add posts.  I have a number of projects completed or nearly so and ready to reinstall - cockpit coming panels, rebuilt cockpit seat bases, refit interior headliner, window leaks front and sides, steering cable and linkage (had to remove holding tank to gain access...took a while to muster the courage for that), fab'd a new bilge platform (to hold the holding tank) and new deck supports, etc., etc., etc.

These old babes are cool though not blue water boats.  They're great weekenders and day boats with remarkable cabin room - bunks for 6, comfortable for 4, palatial for 2 and a really nice doghouse for 1.

Thanks again for the links.

jsten
